Orbit gray touchup for cheap!

Got orbit gray wheels with scratches/scuffs? Want to order touchup paint from BMW. Well, it ain't gonna happen. For me, at least. Sure, the dealer took all my info and told me it'd be a couple of days. Sure, they never called back and after a couple of weeks I called to check. Sure, they said it's in and ready. Sure, I had to suffer through two different parts counter people who seemed hell bent on increasing the day's un-asked-for annoyance. But FINALLY one said - "Here it is. Estoril Blue."

WHAT?!!! How many times did I say "orbit gray" for the wheels? Apparently not enough. Anyway, the best they could offer was "See a body shop."

Well. All I wanted was to touch up some curb rash, not refinish the entire wheel. And so I did what an artist always does - got me some paint. In this case, gloss black and gray Testors paint, just like you used on all those models in your happy youth. Sat down, poured some black into the cap and then dripped drop by drop of gray until it looked reasonable. And applied with a small brush over the scrape.

BIG success. All the touchups are invisible to someone stand in front of the wheels and looking down. Get up close and you can certainly see it. But's beyond what I care about. I simply wanted that bright silver gone and a nicely matched gray to take its place. Mission accomplished. All for the cost of two dinky bottles of modeling paint.

Here's a pic and an arrow pointing to the repaired section:

They are in Hong Kong.

The wheel looks Ferric Gray to me and I have ordered from quiktouch several times for touchup paint. Spray they have to ship by boat but touchup brush you get in about 10 days.
Picture makes them look lighter but don’t be afraid to use quiktouch, found them a couple years ago from guys in UK and other places ordering from them. Have bought Ferric Gray II, Mineral White for our X1 and Glacier Silver for my M235.

Unless BMW uses the exact same color paint yet gives them different names, it's orbit, not ferric gray ;-)

I just went to Autozone and matched one of the Duplicolor sticks as close as possible. I just had a small chip from snapping a 17mm socket when putting on my snows last fall. Promptly bought the Burger Motorsports protective socket.

BMW doesn’t seem to have a part number for the B35 Orbit Grey paint, but here is a link to many other wheel colour paint part numbers: http://bmwfans.info/accessories-cata...eel_colors_bmw

Paint does not stick to aluminum very well. I put a coat of self etching primer on first. I can only find it in a spray. So I just spray a little on to a piece of plastic and then dip my brush in and have at it.

Buy yourself a set of alloygator rim protectors and kiss goodbye to road rash. I bought them and now they take the beating from curbs. The color goes all the way through so if you get any curb rash you don't see any bare metal. Thye are around $100, I believe for a set of 4. You have to deflate your tire, cut to size, place them between the rim and tire bead and inflate. I have a friend who owns a shop so he put them on for me. Lots of colors to choose from. For orbit I used the black protectors as grey was too noticeable. They called me after 3 months and wanted to know how I liked them. They also covered some curb rash I had on 2 wheels. BMW wanted $150/wheel to refinish.

No its probably orbit sinced they offered it a couple years later, just saying I think quiktouch sells it because I could not find B55 Ferric Gray II anywhere in the US but quiktouch had it. Its definitely a different code but I don’t know the number for orbit.

Last year had to have a wheel straightened and painted after an altercation with a pothole.
Even Wheel Collision Center in Bath PA(high end well respected shop) could not get orbit grey. They had to custom blend. They also mixed up a small batch for me for future touch ups. Nothing available from Quicktouch back then, good to know they have it now.
