I'm comparing the 2 models now. 440i is alot prettier especially the rear & comes with hard top whereas M240i comes with soft top & less pretty aesthetically but has better performance. Also here in Singapore, the brand new cars are retailing at $238k vs $322k (less all freebies $304k) so there's a huge difference.

Happy to read all the sharing here.

P.S. for those that are not aware, we probably have the most expensive cars in the world due to our tax.

You are going to get biased stuff here towards the two.

Having said that, and as others have echoed, it boils down to what you feel is more important. IMO the 4 series is a gorgeous car, you will sacrifice some performance and feel for more room and luxury. The 4 will have a better sound system, the interior is a bit nicer, it will have more room, and really, if you get the mppk for it, it will make the same power as the m240 i think.

I like the looks of the 4 a bit better than the 2 BUT and this is a big one for me, i dont like how big the 4 actually is. For me the 2 series ks the perfect sized car, and having had multiple 4 loaners, i have to say i love the car, but not to own. Its just too large, it was nice for the occasional time i had it for a bit, but im always glad to be back in my car.

If you are ok with some of these smaller differences, you might be quite happy with the 4.

FWIW, if you can get a copy of the May 2018 issue of Roundel magazine, check out the editorial by Alex McCulloch, entitled "Won over by (gasp!) a new BMW.

Very interesting perspective from someone who clearly favors older BMWs for their ride, power and handling.

GL with your decision,

This point has been repeated many times on this forum: the difference in the INTERIOR VOLUME of the two cars is minuscule, as you can tell if you pull up the specs. The major difference is in rear leg room. There is some difference in shoulder room, but not a whole lot.
In general, interior dimensions increase as a small fraction of exterior volume in all vehicles, except for length. So if you really need leg room for all, buy an Escalade or a Navigator.

No need to go to that extreme....as I happily learned, the 3 Series GT is a well-kept secret but does an outstanding job as a very spacious "family" car with much rear seat legroom and cargo capacity as it's 7" longer than the 3 Series wagon!

I was torn too but the only downside to the 2 is the backseats arent comfortable for kids or adults for longer drives. The backseats have very little padding and are damn near vertical rather than slightly reclined in the 4. I'm glad I went with my m235 but the family would of rather I had gotten the 4.

I suppose it also depends on if you are in a one or two car family.....if the latter, and it happens to be a larger SUV type vehicle, some of the compromise of obtaining a 2 is mitigated.

Good reviews on the 440i after BMW tweaked the suspension. I think it's sexy, I really like the boot view! I'd guess that the M240i edges it out as a better driver's car, although I haven't driven a 440i yet.

I lived in S'pore in the late 90s. At that time, a new car cost ~4X what it would cost in the States. I drove a BMW 520i - it would have cost $35K in the States, and in S'pore it cost $140K.

From your post it looks like you are comparing M240 v 440 convertibles as opposed to coupes and most of the comparisons you've read in this thread involve coupes. In regard to convertibles, unless you really love the idea of a hard top vert, the M240 is much better. The hard top on the 440 adds a huge amount of weight compared to the soft top on the 240 and in all the wrong places. The mechanism is much more complicated which could be costly down the road it it needs repairs. The hard top vert also makes traveling with any real luggage in the trunk next to impossible with the top down. Rumor has it, the next "G" version of the 4 Series will return to the soft top configuration. The new 8 Series vert will be a soft top and MB and most of other convertibles are all soft top.

I have a M240i and have since looked at the 440i as a potential "next" car.

I find the M240i to hit all the right notes as far as size goes (2 adults and no kids). Tuned w/ a Dinan Stage 1, the car is exceptionally quick. Very quick!

That being said, I never drive the car at it's limits. 1/2 -3/4 throttle is plenty fast enough for my driving style and even then, rarely do I do that. The car is driven like a normal car and is quite enjoyable. I like knowing that I have a little race car than can run w/ the "big boys", even though I don't.

The 440i would probably be a better overall automobile for me (even though I prefer a smaller car). Base performance between the two - 0-60 4.8 sec vs 0-60 4.4 sec isn't a big difference for someone like me. Any car that can turn 0-60 in the 5 second range is pretty quick.

The 4 series looks nice, and has a more appealing interior to my eye. I wanted to go w/ a oyster interior in my M240i, but chose black instead (since the oyster did not carry over to the dash area (unlike the 4).

The 4 would be a better riding car w/ more appointments than the 2. Since I drive pretty normally, these would be a nice plus. I fell in love w/ the tanzanite blue w/ the Venetian beige interior.

Just depends on what you want and what appeals to you. 440i would be a very nice car IMO, as is the M240i.

IMO it's an easy call. If your DD consists of more highway driving the 4 is better, more back roads the 2 is what you want.

If it's anything like the M340i I've been reading about, it should be a real treat!

I had a brand new 440i loaner while my M240i was in for a repair.

It was ok but felt big, heavy, and slow.

It made me miss my M240i.

Me too, guessing it will be pretty quick right out of the box. 440i is listed a 0-60 4.8 sec.(automatic)...would guess the M440i will be in the same performance range as the stock M240i is now 0-60 4.4 sec. or there abouts.

I agree. The 4s are a dime a dozen. I attended two car meets in the last 45 days. One meet had a few M235/M240. The last one I attended, I was the lone wolf. Plenty of 3s, 4s, and 5s.

BMW has an uncanny ability to create models that are aimed at qualitatively different goals, so comparing models on simple data points does not do it justice - they really tune for feel and mannerisms, aiming to please different groups of drivers with different cars (the cars have a personality, not just performance specs). To me, my 2 is perfect; but I know there are those out there feeling exactly that way about the 4's (or an x5 for that matter). Especially when you add in M-car vs non-M, the differences will probably be very subjective - obvious, but not something you can get off of interior volumes or Hp figures. All that said, I'd personally take the M2 or M240 in a quick second, even if they were the same price.
