Insurance card shows M2 when car is M240i

Just posting to see if anybody else has had a similar issue. Have had Geico Insurance on my M240i ever since I bought it. Insurance card always showed M240i as it should. After this past policy renewal, the card showed as an M2. VIN number or policy costs hasn't changed, so I'm sure it's nothing to worry about. I wonder if I get pulled over and show the cops my insurance card, if they'll question me. I mean... I WISH it was an M2...

Well, the question will be are they charging you m2 premium?

If they mis-identified your car, I would contact them and get them to correct their information. My guess is that an M2 would be more expensive to insure than the M240i, if not this billing cycle, then maybe the next. Regardless of premium cost, I would get the information corrected.

if the vin is the same, they know what car you have, it's probably an abbreviation. The premiums are usually based on the vin.

I know whenever I get a new car, they never ask me the make/model, they want the vin. The vin tells them the safety options and all that other stuff that they need to determine discounts, if any.

I noticed this as well when I bought my 2015 M235i last year. (Also have Geico insurance) I did call them to verify, and they told me that they did not have any option to list it as an M235i on their end, that M2 was the closest.

I did also ask them about the rates - as the M2 is certainly more to insure than the typical 2 series. They assured me that the rate was correct and it was associated with the VIN, etc.

P.S. - Have also been pulled over by the cops a couple times now since getting the car, they have no issues with identifying the car, lol.

Good catch—the GEICO card that I received in August now says M2 when it said M240i back in February. The declaration page (with limits, deductibles and premiums) also now says M2. My rate has remained about the same, but it's something to monitor to make sure they don't charge a higher rate. Thanks for pointing this out.

I would mention it. Although the rate didn’t go up much, maybe it would have dropped instead. Probably can be adjusted with a quick phone call and better to have all the paperwork line up in the event you need it, especially if it’s for something big. Let’s hope you never have to use it, but a few minutes to maybe prevent a headache down the road is worth it to me.

Hello,
Same on my side, I just insured my m235i with GEICO and m2 came out when I entered the VIN instead of m235i so same issue. Regarding the rates, I've compared with other insurances, and GEICO rates were in the same range, if not a little bit cheaper than the other ones in my case and the other ones were correctly displaying m235i so I don't think this glitch affect the price you pay. But it never hurts to call them and make sure it's ok!

Mine did too, I have an M240 but Geico calls it an M2. Price wasn't any higher so it's whatever.

I had the same issue with GEICO. My M240 shows up as a M2 and my M550 shows up as a M5 on the insurance cards. I called and it’s just the way it’s abbreviated in their system. My rates (and yours) are correct - as previously stated rates are VIN driven regardless of what is displayed on the card.

I have figured it out: they only allow two letters in their system!
That is so lame.

Letters or combination of letters, numbers? What would they code a Panamera Turismo?

Ask them if it gets totaled will you get reimbursed for a M235 of an M2??

I don't have GEICO, but I'd be really curious what answer you'd get if one of you GEICO customers called them up and said, "I'm thinking of adding a new 2021 BMW to my account and wanted to price out the insurance cost of two different models." And then you gave them an M2 VIN and a M240i VIN. What kind of answer would you get? Would there be a difference in premium? Inquiring minds want to know...

I went onto Geico and made a quote to replace my 2015 M235i with an 2015 M2 - my estimated rate increase was $52 for 6 months. I might be giving Geico a call or look for a new insurance provider...

Don't forget the rider for OEM-only parts and not LKQ (like kind and quality).

I can recommend CSAA from the decades I lived in the Bay Area. At the time, the rates were very competitive, and the service was excellent.

CSAA even repainted my entire M6 without raising my rates after I drove through a gravel storm on I-80 in Washoe County, Nevada.

A good rule of thumb is to shop around for new car and homeowners insurance every three years.
