Poltergeist in the Trunk?

Driving our 2016 228i convertible just now. Started out and got the trunk open warning message. ... Haven't been in the trunk all day but sure enough it was open. Closed it and drove to our destination... Could not put the top up because, you guessed it, trunk was open again. Fob never came out of my pocket, never touched the release button. What in the world is going on with this car?

This happened to me occasionally. I noticed that with the steering wheel set where I like it I brush my thigh against it every time I enter the vehicle. If the fob happens to be at the contact point in my pocket, sometimes I trigger the trunk unlock button. (Testing showed the fob had to be aligned fairly exactly to trigger the trunk unlock, which is why it is rare.) The sound of the truck unlatching can be missed in a noisy environment or if I'm distracted.

I don't seem to do that exiting the car, which would be a bigger worry since it would mean leaving the trunk unlocked.

Rare indeed. We've owned the car about a year now and this is the first time it has happened. And then to happen twice in one drive. The only thing is I didn't get in or out of the car before the second time. But I suppose it's possible I bumped the fob somehow while driving.

An alternative to glue is to use Bimmercode or an equivalent to set a 10-second delay to opening the trunk. That is, you would have to press on the fob continuously for 10 seconds to open the trunk, and a quick accidental touching of the fob would have no effect.

I used to pocket dial the trunk, windows, and panic alarm on the fob annoyingly often.

I got a fob case that covers the buttons and none of these things happen anymore, ever.

Where did you get the fob case? Do you have a link or something?

Another great idea to look into.

I got mine from my dealership, it is a genuine BMW part. It is a bit pricey, but high quality. Can be found a bit cheaper from some third parties;

I actually pocket dialed my trunk today. I was sitting down on a stool behind the car to work on a small tiller and I heard the truck latch go off. This is the first time since I bought the car in November. I was carrying a small plastic coin holder at the time in the same pocket.

In my first year of ownership, my trunk was unlatched every time I approached the car. I changed how I carry my key fob and it hasn't happened since.
