Need help - winter tire set

Hi all,

I have a 2018 M240 Rwd and looking to purchase a set of winter tires and rims. I came across a used set of 18'' with winter tires Nokian's Hakkapeliitta 8 225/45R18 front, 245/45R18 back. They were on a F80 M3 previously.

I'm very new to this and would appreciate your input on whether this setup will fit my car. My stock OE rims and tires are staggered and the tire size is the same. However I'm not sure what else to look for to ensure this setup will work. Any advice is much appreciated!

There are likely to be a few problems with that set on an M240i. First is that unless the wheels were used with spacers and longer bolts on the F80, they will likely have an offset of 25mm, 20mm more than advisable for the front and 25mm more than normal on the rear, likely leading to tyre rub on the fenders and wheel well liners, if not more severe body contact.

The front tyres at 225/45-18 are also 23mm larger diameter than the stock 225/40-18 ones, this can work with an 18x8 wheel with 45mm offset, but not with much higher. The rear tyres at 245/45-18 are 49mm larger diameter than the stock 245/35-18 ones, low offset wheels are going to cause quite a few problems and the speedo will be quite a way off and potentially the ABS system and stability control systems may have issues with a tyre that is about 8% larger than stock.

It may be worth doing a test fit, but I would say they probably won’t work.

One other issue at the moment is to not delay winter tyre purchase, already there are tyre supply issues in certain sizes due to supply chain issues caused by Covid, full production is still not back to 2019 levels and in some sizes for a given manufacturer the only stock available is leftover from late 2019 or early 2020 production. I’ve been told by my trusted tyre supplier that less common sizes may not be produced again until 2022. I’ve run into this problem in the past month for some 13” track tyres and the front 19” winter tyres I needed for my SUV.

Thank you for your detailed feedback. I found another set of 225/45/18 square setup on staggered rims. 7.5 width for fronts and 8 inch width at the back. They apparently came off m240 so should be okay but wanted your thoughts. Thanks again!!
