RIP to my track car engine

At the end of one of my best track days this year, my engine decided to seize.

I was cranking away overtaking cars all day. It was 80 degrees in WA state and the track was hot. After my last session of the day I pulled into the paddock to pack up all my track stuff. I stopped, put the car in gear, turned it off and went to the bathroom. Came back, packed up my car, and it wouldn't turn on. I checked the fuses, battery etc and the car was saying there was a starter issue. A few of my buddies decided we should push start the car since AAA won't come pick up cars from the track. We push started the car and it started running.

I drove the car on the highway for about 10 miles and then the car started flashing with drive train malfunction, then low oil pressure. I pulled over on the freeway and called a tow truck.

After 6 hrs of waiting and towing I was finally home. The DME codes read VANOS issues. I replaced the starter, VANO solenoids, battery, checked all fuses, checked the starter relay box, literally everything I could think of. The car still wouldn't turn over. I decided to try to bar over the car from the front crank nut and the engine won't turn over. It's toast. I checked the oil filter for metal but there is nothing. The engine oil was just replaced by a local shop one track day before the last one where it crapped out.

A buddy is coming to get it who is a BMW tech. I'm pretty sure it's done.

I just dialed in the JRZ suspension and everything. Super bummed!

+1

It's a sporty street car, not one for negotiating high Gs, on the track..

OP, check online for a used N55, maybe the M2 version, with the enhanced oil pump and suction..

It would be a play and play job.. Good luck.

That's really shitty. Unfortunately the oil pan and pickup aren't sufficient for track usage.

Spun rod bearing.

These motors are stout as hell, but if you're doing sustained high G driving, they really need the revised oil pickup/pump from the N55 M2 and S55. It's all bolt-on stuff.

If you're looking for a used motor, make sure to get one from an M235 as the N55 used has a forged crank. Other N55s (except the N55 in M2) have cast cranks. Everything else is the same.

Make sure to outfit the replacement N55 with the upgraded oil pump system.

Awesome thanks! I will make sure to source the right components so this doesn't happen again.

Well.... rod bearings it was. The engine is salvageable which is good. Crank shaft is good.

Doing a complete rebuild with everything under the sun.

New crank hub, forged pistons, coated bearings, rods, ARP studs, m2 baffled oil pan and accessories, head gasket, seals, pure stage 2 turbo upgrade, spark plugs, coils, VANOS....

I just did a new clutch at the beginning of the summer so I'm good there.

Is there anything else that y'all can think of that I absolutely do? Engine mounts?

Glad to hear it's fixable. Sounds like a competent shop or tech if they're comfortable doing the work, not like the n55 is super difficult to work on. Probably goes without saying, but make sure they clean out all oil passages if there was a lot of metal generated from the rod bearing. If they don't clean areas out, it could spin another one real quick.

And no LSD with track driving? Wow. You're going to be astounded by the difference. I would put every mod penny towards an LSD. It's a different car with the LSD. Even during 5/10 driving. Believe me.

ICY: so the way my engine went out was a small burnout but once i started moving after lowering the pedal pressure the car instantly locked up and wouldn't start roll or anything. engine stopped completely. Only the dash and front radio system would continue to work. Rear wheels also got locked up.

we just checked the crank and the engine was still and wouldnt move.

Car looks absolutely amazing, very well done. Sorry to hear about the engine.

Your m235 is what I want mine to be lol

May I ask what size the rims and tires are? The red looks nasty on the white.

The m2 oil pump and parts etc were about $2000.

I actually found a new n55 f series baffle from a company in Europe. I just ordered it.
