Starter/ignition malfunction

Hey everyone,

First time poster, long time lurker. I took possession of a mineral white metallic xdrive m235i in January to replace my long time STI, and while I love it, I just had to have it towed. My wife and I took a trip downtown to see an exhibit at the science centre, and when we went to leave, the car wouldn't start and showed "starter/ignition malfunction. Please call roadside assistance".

The car is unmodified from stock and I was wondering if anyone else had encountered that malfunction as my search of the forum and Google turned up nothing.

Is it just clicking or struggling to crank?

And you tried unlocking/locking/unlocking the car?

If you lock the car and walk always for a few minutes the computer goes to sleep.

Could have been a glitch. But regardless should have dealer scan the error.

Sorry to hear about this. I've got one and really like it. Not as raw as my Evo X but better in most other aspects.

Did try that too but no joy. The dealer is closed until Monday so I'll see what they have to say.

Thank you for the super quick responses!

Unhappy

Any luck three years later? I still cant find anything on this topic. I'm having a similar problem, the car wont start, tried jumping it and some light smoke came out of the hood and smelled like plastic. Car wont go into neutral either.

Apologies if I’m breaking any rules by adding to this thread after so much time but I just had this issue with my 2018 M240 and thought my experience might help someone in the future. Thankfully still under warranty.

The bmw dealer informed me today that they determined the root cause is a warped flywheel. They are going to replace both the starter and flywheel to fix the issue. Going to take 2-5 days depending on how quick they can source parts.

Nope, no need to apologize.

Thanks for adding your input. This forum is here for each of us to share both our experiences of our F22s and any information that will help other owners.

Welcome aboard!
