Can someone give me an answer as I've gone to urotuning and fcpeuro for an oil kit and the latter told me they don't have the correct oil for my car ?
2020 Bmw M240i xdrive

How many quarts/liters do I need ?

Seems I need this one TOP TEC 6600 SAE 0W-20

I'm in chicago and the cars only mods are a dinan midpipe. No track just an aggressive daily driver.

It's my first bmw so I want to make sure I do everything right. Thank you

Capacity is 6.5quarts. That oil is fine.

You might also consider BMW Twin Power Turbo oil from FCPEuro.

It's supposedly formulated to reduce the buildup on on the back side of the valves, which is common with direct injection (DI) engines.

0W-20 is way to thin, better use 0W-30, and if you tune your car then you can use 5w-30 or 5w-40 later on

0w20 is the only oil BMW now certifies for use for full fill in North America (as opposed to top up) on the B58 engine as LL17-FE+ oils are only 0w20. Anything else will not meet BMWs warranty requirements, as the engine is designed for a 0w20 oil.

The BMW engineers obviously have a different opinion. With the stock engine and hundreds of thousands of cars out there with many now over 200,000km over the past 6 years on the B58 engine, nothing has appeared that indicates the engine has an issue using the specified oil in general use (i.e. not tuned or hard track use).

I use Liqui Moly LM2249 5W-30 Special Tec LL Engine Oil as it's LL01 approved as my manual says LL-01 FE or LL-14 FE+ for full fill, "LL01 for up to a quart can be added". (My manual is dated 2016 as I have an early build 2017 M240i) "FE" stands for fuel economy and BMW has to appease the ever-changing CAFE standards so I will go ahead and make the tradeoff for ever so slightly less fuel economy for more protection.

Also here is what it says word for word regarding viscosity from page 211 of my owner's manual: "When selecting an engine oil, make sure that the engine oil has the viscosity grade SAE 0W-30W or SAE 0W-20. Alternatively, also engine oils with viscosity grades SAE 5W-20, SAE 5W-30, SAE 0W-40 or SAE 5W-40 can be used"

Also, my fellow forum members from the Great White North and Chicago have a different climate than I'm in. I live in Southern California where it rarely gets below 40 Fahrenheit (4 Celcius) for a low in the winter (never freezes here). Spring and fall we're in the 80's at times during the days. Summer? it's after 9pm right now and the AC is still pumpin. 0W-20 in daily 85-100 degree stop and go traffic? no thanks.

Curious as I recently purchased an 18 M240, I did an oil change 2 weeks after I got it just to be sure. I figured for the warranty period I would just purchase the BMW oil via FCP and follow the 0W-20 sticker on the hood. Living in South Florida, similar to your climate, do you suggest just getting the liqui molly kit instead? No tunes and only 30k miles on it. Possibly tuning in the future when warranty ends..

The 20 weight oil was introduced for efficiency standards (mileage per gallon) and nothing more. It is THIN... And the engine sounds a ton better with 5-30 or 0-40... My opinion. But there's not much difference in engines and BMW recommends a heavier oil for the M2, lol...

The 0 weight isn't needed except in the coldest climates, like Chicago for sure. Down south, I would stick with the 5-# oils. And quite frankly, use what you like, just change it at 5k miles, not the BMW recommended intervals which were extended once they began providing free oil changes. Just don't do it! Do the in between intervals on your own, keep receipts. Also, other fluid intervals should be at shorter timelines than what BMW recommends, if you plan to keep the car. Leasee's need not worry, lol

I have 25K on mine and like cooolone2 said above, change it more often than BMW recommends and you'll be fine.

Regarding FCPEuro, this is where I purchased my oil change kit mentioned above (Liqui Moly LM2249 5W-30 Special Tec LL) You only have to pay for the first oil change. All subsequent oil change kits are free per their return policy of everything they sell. (you just have to pay for return shipping the oil and filter back to them in the original or approved containers) And they actually list the M240i as an approved model for this oil on their site if it matters:

A good way to get the "true" specs on a German oil is to go to the company's German website. I have a couple of 5l bottles of LM 5W30 4200 waiting to go in my '18 M240i. I've used this oil when I've tracked the car and it stands upwell. Over at "Bob's the oil guy" there's been a thread on this oil. Many aren't sure that the oil is a "true synthetic." In Germany an oil can not be labeled as "synthetic" unless its base stock is either Group 4 or Group 5. If the base stock is from hydro-cracked dino oil the oil can not be labeled as "synthetic." LM 5W30 4200 is labeled as "synthetic" on the LM German website.

5W40 here for almost 70k. No issues, although in the last 2 years I have not been accumulating miles as quickly due to working from home.
