Those links make it clear it's not for the m235 ! There are other parts too, sound insulation parts, that are in the 228 and not m235! By intent, so I'll stay put...

Here's my thoughts on fitting:

I started by opening the door wide and, working from inside, dropping the seal down beyond the hinges, straps etc so it was lightly wedged within the back of the wing (ie ahead of the door's inner leading edge. The rounded top of the seal has a recess for the prominent bolt which makes it easy to get it at the right height (and to tell the top of the seal from the bottom).

I chose then to work from half way down the seal and hook it around the flange of the front wing - the space to work is biggest there. Once a few inches are tucked in, the seal is quite well located so you can adjust the height. I then worked back up to the top, outside the car with the door partly open just pushing the seal by hand until it wrapped around the flange and sat neatly in place (my picture of the partly installed run of seal shows that it's obvious when it's correctly fitted).

At the top, from inside the door the curved section of the seal falls into place and tucks in if the height is right; if not, a gentle tug will still move it up and down at this stage. Then I worked down to the bottom.

The bottom end of the seal seems quite big. There's a kink in the bodywork and a matching kink in the seal - when they align it all just falls into place. Part of it disappears into the bodywork and the rest forms a rounded lip that protrudes a little towards the door.

Probably 5 minutes each side and the second one is much easier than the first, no great skill required: just a little patience.
Excellent write up. Thanks!

Ordered mine and got them a few weeks ago. Got around to installing them today. Not too bad. Took some figuring out of what went where. Took me maybe 20 mins. No pics, but don't think they would show anything others already haven't.

Jury still out on difference, but I'm a 'drive it like you stole it' kind of person and since I put them on I had my Dinantronics Stage 2 Tune installed and i've been - let's say, experimenting...

The seals are fitted into the small gap between the back of the wing (where it turns back into the bodywork) and the firewall. This suggests they are sealing the engine compartment from the void around the door hinges. That's consistent with containing engine noise but I felt that I had a reduction in other external noise too.

The hinge area is outside of the door seal, but within the bodywork. It may be that it cleans up the airflow in that space, or stops a flow of (turbulent?) air from the engine compartment. It may also be a placebo effect

I did wonder about loss of cooling in the engine compartment but I'm sure that must be negligible.

I got these about a week or so after ordering them, but didn't get around to installing them until this past Thursday. Wasn't too bad. Probably would have cut my install time by two-thirds if I'd had help from someone who had or if I had done it before.

Top is easy to figure out. Bottom had me perplexed and even had driver's side wrong until I did passenger side and figured out how it was to sit.

No pics and not sure if it made a difference (because the next day I had the Dianatronics Stage 2 Tune installed and I've been driving around trying to make the car make more noise since...

Thanks for the offer though!

I had some road noise reduction in mine, but it's all subjective lol. engine noise wasn't bad to begin with (and probably through speakers anyway!)

I really see no need. My 228i is quiet as a church mouse with the moon roof closed and comfort mode selected. It is a little louder with the SPORT setting with active sound.

I had a 228i not to long ago as a loaner car.. Right off the parking lot, I did notice it gets surprisingly loud inside the cabin, when you step on it in sports mode; as it holds the revs long enough to squeeze the power out of each gear.. And as far as I know, the 228i does not have Active Sound only the 235i.. There must be some logical reason BMW did not include these seals in the 235is, other than than cost cutting or just to screw with us. My guess is engine intake noise, since with the wind noise is still very much present with the weatherstripping installed in 235i.

Nope my 2014 228i does have Active Sound. Some folks even coded theirs to have a different sound than the 228i. I can make mine sound like an M3 or the M235i if I wanted to.

322,

Maybe difficult to quantify but have you noticed any cooling issues since installing seals ?

Also, has wind/road noise reduced ?

Has intake noise become more noticeable ?

Cheers,

Installed on m235 and noticed less tire noise and wind noise at speed. No issues on cooling. Didn't notice aNY change in induction sound but 100% stock.

1 ) No. Engine oil temp and water temps remain exactly as they were before the install.

2 ) Yes. Not massively, but noticeably so. FWIW, I have ASD disabled in my car, so the interior is quieter to start with.

3 ) Not in the least.

Hi BP. No, my comment about cooling was light-hearted, if there's a loss then it's tiny and shouldn't bother those of us in temperate climes anyway.

It's hard to tell what but I felt that the overall noise levels dropped after I fitted them; probably a combination of road (tyre) and wind noise although there must be some engine noise too. I was early in the running-in period when I fitted them, I've since finished that and am driving "normally" now. I think the cruising noise levels are good, though not quite as quiet as my 3. I still get a characterful vroom at higher rpm but that doesn't last long before speed limits get in the way.

Hi all. I'm new here. I just picked up a 2016 228i Convertible about a month ago. Anyway, I stumbled across this thread and after reading it, I rushed outside to see if I had the weather-strips. Indeed, my 01/2016 production vehicle does have them.

I cannot tell from the pictures how to put this on?
Could someone please post a video or some pictures with their flash ...

The picture of it installed on the white car is that the driver or passenger side ?

Thank you

I got both pieces of the insulation for $26 from Brian at Sun Motors. As the others have said, it went in quite easily. Without it you can even see light through the door to the fender well. Kind of felt cheap. I feel better now!

So does this look normal? Apologies for the dirty car, it hasn't rained here in awhile so the car was dusty, and we got a slight sprinkle today, go figure.

The rest of the weather stripping fits fine but the bottom seems odd. If that's how it's suppose to look then it looks kind of cheap.

That's how mine looks, I think it's right. You don't really see it most of the time.

Ok cool, your DIY mentioned the bottom disappearing so I was worried.

Although upon reviewing the pictures I guess it looks fine.
