I've driven a RWD 2er with dedicated snow tires for 5 winters in the snow belt, and have NEVER come close to getting stuck. A RWD with dedicated snows will do much better than a AWD car with "all season" tires. It's not even close. In fact Tire Rack had some great videos showing the performance difference between the tires. It's quite revealing. Have a look here:
While I wholeheartedly agree with you, if you trust the testing numbers eg lap times, braking, speed from Tirerack the the OP's tires, Michelin Pilot Sport AS DO NOT get outperformed by the Summer rubber by any significance.

For this reason coupled with better durability and traction to get me into the shoulder season, I am dumping my Summer tires for these.

the best tire (or tyre) review here for this topic.

All season tire performs reasonably well in those test conditions.

I would be OK with all season tire in Chicago.

Are you focused on the convenience of getting moving or the necessity of stopping/turning, particularly if something unexpected happens in front of you?

For 3 season use, sure. Not for year around. You get plenty of snow, ice, cold to warrant dedicated winters. my .02

I am using winter now but I will just go with all season after this tire wears out.
(I do have dedicated rim/tire for Auto x though)

Just need to slow down a little when it snows. that's all it takes. (no hill)
Road clears within few hours.

Difference between the all season and winter tire in cold dry/wet condition is not that big.

the difference in braking performance for cold dry/wet conditions between winter and all season tire was not big enough.
(Basically about the same difference between cheap summer tire vs expensive summer tire)
In fact, all season tire matched or beat the winter tire down to 32F.

Are you saying everyone needs to use RE71r in summer?
(I did have RE71r for Auto x though. lol)

My traction with X-Ice 3 snows and LSD is so good, I can use it as a snow plow.
