Do you get ice on that side of the Rockies, other than maybe in the fall or spring? What about the Chinook winds that can reduce a remarkable depth of snow in a fairly short period of time - do those winds occur that far north?

I remember a car trip with my parents to Calgary in Jan., 1953. We drove up from Billings, MT in a '52 Ford, and there was heavy snow on the ground all the way up and back. I'm pretty sure it was over 3 ft. deep on the ground when we rolled into Calgary - I had to look up to see over the snow banks along the sides of the roads. Even after the dumps we'd get in Montana, that was impressive for a little kid to see in a major city.

I'd love to know what my parents had for tires on that car; compared to today's tires, they must have been quite modest in terms of their absolute capabilities. My impression from that time is that staying on the road and off the bumpers and fenders of other cars was job one when driving in winter conditions.

You may be able to remove the studs, making the Haka's reasonably similar to the Soto's

You have a RWD car so the front and back will never handle exactly the same.
Do you actually need studs? I would advocate to the non-studded ones. I think you get more snow than us here but after downsizing to 17s, even with RWD, I can plow through the white stuff with any brand of winter rubber.

PSI's

My door sticker is for my 19"s 41/45 . just realized for my 18" winter set to lower psi 34/38. I'm a tech geek surprised I didn't figure sooner. Went 120mph today on lower psi all good.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate this advice.
Should I do all Hakkas or all Pirellisottozeros? I will looks for 2 used tires
I run winter and summer tires and wheels and put Pirelli Sottozero 3 on my E46 RWD. Amazing snow tire. Reviews would suggest they won't last long but I'll get them again because they have impressed me so much. I also put them on the new 2er xDrive which has not seen the snow yet. I am sure it will eventually being in snow country🙃

+1 on the Sottozero 3s, I prefer them over X-Ice Xi3s for use here in Alberta winters.

I always get a little laugh when I visit Vermont in the summer and you always hear the click of studded tires of a few cars that keep them on year round.

My son didn’t take the studded winter tyres off his GMC 2500 truck this summer due to lack of a summer set. By the end of the summer he had thrown most of the studs out due to the high distortion of the tyres when hot. Needs a new set of tyres for the winter now.

Got the winter wheel/tires set on my daily driver E39 today, but this is our first winter with the F22 (wife's daily driver). It came with staggered M Double Spoke Style 461s with performance run-flats. I picked up a new set of Style 400s with all-season Pirelli run-flats. With the threat of snow, changing over to ice & rain, maybe this weekend is a good time to try them on!

If you can time the ice right, you might consider taking it over to the nearest huge parking lot to practice your car control technique.

I think you might be disappointed with those AS tires in the ice/snow but would be a hoot to slide around on!

...and sell me that 228 when your'e done with it. It's exactly what I want next

My wife is a teacher, so when weather is bad they cancel school = less driving. The A/S must be better that a staggered sports set-up - at least that's what I'm hoping!

I did a staggered summer setup on a random cold day late April, SCARY. All season as long as it's reasonably flat by you will be fine.
