Welcome Track Rats
First, I'd like to thank the Mods for creating this section.
Second, from here on out, my track stuff (reviews, videos, stupid comments) will primarily stay in this subforum. Third, I think we should get a roll-call of all of those people on these forums who put their car on the track/cone course. Post below. |

I am looking to get started in autocross with the M235i.
First event is in May... but it won't be with my M235i. I'm signed up up for the Miami UDE autocross event on the 16th. Should be a good/decent introduction to autocross, right?

Yes it is! I did the UDE last summer and that is where I fell in love with the M235i. The instructors were great and like you said its a great intro to autocross. Enjoy!

I'm definitely an autocrosser and track rat. 4 track days and 3 AX events since December so far.

My first autocross of the season is next weekend (we're just getting rid of all the snow in New England) and my first track day is 5/9-5/10......can't wait.

I discovered HPDE road course events in 2007 with my 2005 Mustang GT. A friend with a Spec Miata introduced me to this hobby. My first event was absolutely nerve-wracking, and I was genuinely relieved when it was over and my car had gotten through it unscathed. At the same time, it was exhilarating beyond my wildest expectations and I was hooked. I finally started to relax a bit on my third event, and became very comfortable and confident on the track.
Since 2007, I have only missed one yearly event, so I have 7 track days under my belt. I have done these tracks in the Northeast US: 2007 - Lime Rock Park 2008 - Loudon 2009 - Watkins Glen 2010 - Watkins Glen 2011 - No event 2012 - NJ Motorsports Park - Thunderbolt course 2013 - Lime Rock 2014 - Thompson Speedway But now that I have sold the Mustang and have just about 1000 miles on my M235i, I already can sense some nervousness returning. The difference of course is that the BMW cost twice as much as the Mustang, and probably costs at least twice as much for any repair. But, you only live once as they say, and there really is no substitute for the track if you are an enthusiast, so no doubt I will somehow work up the nerve to take my precious new baby to a track. Here's a short 1-minute video of my only experience going "off track" at an event. Technically this was a "2 wheels off" excursion, since two wheels were still on the track, but nonetheless I did go off the pavement and had to pit afterwards and report the incident: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJ61jI5fwwM

HPDE regular here. I thought this might be a good place to hang out and pick up some tips while I wait for the M2 (deposit down).

HPDE instructor with NASA and Just Track It here. I usually run my track only 370z, but since its only a one day event and its going to be raining all day, I'm taking the 2 to Atlanta Motor Speedway roval this weekend. May or may not drive it. Might just ride with the student, depending on the weather.

So there hasn't been any activity in this thread for a couple months. Might as well revive it. I'm hopefully picking up my own 228 6MT this week. It's the daily so Premium, CWP and lighting. Should be a fun 5 year project. I got hooked on track driving the first time I went to the Ring with friends. I have since sold my daily/track car. I will be moving back to SC this summer and will be spending some time at Road Atlanta, Carolina Motorsports Park, and VIR when time allows as well as AutoX with SCCA and BMWCCA. I also plan on going up to the Performance Driving Center in Spartanburg a couple of times. I did 3 laps at the Ring and 16 at Hockenheim. I actually prefer the GP layout of Hockenheim to all the elevation change of the Ring. I have to ship the 228 back to SC the middle of July so I'm hoping to get a Ring trip in for the 4th of July weekend. Here's a snip from Hockenheim. My best lap was a 2:24 on MPAS+ all seasons (because I was too lazy to put the PZeros back on). The red Fiesta ST is a friend of mine and please excuse the change I forgot to take out of the shifter boot.

Add myself to the list. Got my first HPDE scheduled in July for my 2. I'm a former R6 sportbike track rat, mostly Loudon, but also VIR, and NJ Thunderbolt. I got to see one MotoGP race at Laguna Seca a few years back

I'm a regular HPDE attendee and instructor. My track rides have been, in order, a 1996 Carrera 4S, a 2004 Mini Cooper S, a 2004 M3, a 2007 Cayman S and now a 2014 Carrera S. I am not sure I will track my M235 though I haven't decided for sure. I saw my first one at the track this past weekend and the owner was all smiles!
