New BMW DCT

Did anybody notice that the new X1 and X2 have a new 7 SPD dual clutch transmission? I thought it was announced earlier this year that BMW was killing the DCT. Or is it just that the M class cars won't have them anymore?

DCTs are effectively replacing manuals for transverse cars; lower trims get the DCT and M35i's get the torque-converter 8-speed. I'm a little surprised that the X1/X2 M35i are supposed to have a DCT, so perhaps the engineers decided to take make things simple and keep it DCT across the board. I certainly wouldn't hold you breath for a change of this kind to make it across the lineup though, obviously a transverse transmission is a wholly different unit to longitudinal, and the choice to make FWD cars with a DCT and RWD with an auto is likely more to do with packaging and torque capacity, rather than BMW giving the finger to RWD models.
