M-Performance LSD Fluid
Has anybody replaced the fluid on the M-Performance LSD along with their first oil change?
I am coming up on 2,500 miles and would like to do an initial oil change, but also thought of the fluid for the LSD. |

Agree with Liquidpaper. Sealed and fluid's good for the lifetime of the LSD. Only need attention when servicing LSD.

The diff's have been sealed for a least 10 years and I know of none of my friends who have had any problems with their diff's.

Welded, yes. That is absolutely true. However, the MP LSD has no drain plug (but is welded, just like a regular BMW Diff) for the gear oil. Differentials with limited slip functionality usually have a drain plug for the gear oil (so you can change it).

guys there is a lot of confusion on this.
A. There is a fill plug on the m performance lsd. You can use a transfer pump and change the fluid at will. The lsd does not need to be removed. I do mine every 4-5 track days. I use Redline. B. The fluid is prob. good for 100k in a stock car that never gets the oil heated up. On the track it may get out of heat range and the fluid will not lubricate properly accelerating wear. C. Clutch pack system so the oil gets contaminated with the dust from the friction plates. |

A: I see no doubt in this post. B: BMW use to recommend that the oil should be changed at the 1200 mile break in point and then changed every 30,000 miles thereafter. This all changed as soon as they were on the hook for maintanence. See that as you will. C: Definitely. Quote:

It is hard to find information on it, but I was told by a dealer mechanic that cars with the BMW M Performance limited slip differentials should use:
BMW Differential Gear Oil SAF-XJ+FM part number83222282583. He said that although for some clutch differentials the BMW specification calls for their standard differential oil, there is a service bulletin out basically stating that if clutch type limited slip differentials are making noise to switch them to the BMW differential oil with friction modifiers. Based on Forum consensus, this is the same as Castrol Syntrax Limited Slip 75W-140 Both of these oils contain friction modifiers for the clutches. Last edited by mdputnam; 06-27-2016 at 01:19 PM.. |

The reality of "lifetime" fluid is, if you wait till you have a problem to change the fluid, then you replace the aluminum housing containing said fluid at the same time because it's now reached its end of service life - the differential becomes as disposable as the lube. On the other hand, if you replace the fluid at regular intervals you can realistically expect the diff to last the lifetime of the car. |

These units are NOT sealed
There's a single fill port you can shove an extractor in to pull fluid and then re-fill The notion that fluid for any mechanical assembly on these vehicles is lifetime is retarded ESPECIALLY considering how little fluid the diff hold Mine will get drained and refilled at same time as tranny which will likely be ~6k |
