ZF8 ATF CHANGE - Just Shy of 50K

The 5L of Fluid I drained out does not look clean in the glass compare and the (4) magnets had a creamy smear of captured metallic particles.
.
Using the Foxwell Reader to measure AT Temps, ZF ATF Kit with Lifeguard 8 Fluid.

*The fluid dripping from the transmission looks clean and light green &
makes me believe that the L8 is the OEM fluid.

*Simple job & followed the FCPEuro instructional video along with the ZF
Company video.

*The ZF pan was identical to the BMW pan. OEM

*I will look to do this service again at 100k.

*Based on the color and metallic captured -- I would recommend this for
sure before 60k.

Cheers

nice work! Obviously lifetime fluid is a joke. The should specify, lifetime (of a lease) fluid.

It's not a joke, if their objective is to get you into a new every couple of years.

Now we need a post from a member with a manual transmission fluid change at that same interval or less. I'm only at 17K. I can't do it.

Zf Video - Not Exact But Close

.

The 3 Series DIY section has several links

10nm Bolt torque (13) Total (I used a dial type torque wrench)
Star Pattern starting at corner and moving clockwise
34nm Torque on fill bolt
Pan drain was already installed - I tightened one additional click
Temp Range is listed on Green sticker on the side of the pan

I did mine at 40k km. Shop said the fluids integrity was still good but it was pretty dark. Shifting engagement was improved a bit though.

can also verify that shifting quality after 6mt fluid swap is noticeably better. did the swap around 50k. installed magnetic drain plugs because reasons.

I see you used Red Line D4-ATF. The several times I checked on their website, including an email from their tech support, they recommended D6-ATF .I should have the same Getrag transmission that your car has. Mine's a 2015 228i.Why did you choose D4?

I used D4 because that what Chad Morehead from MSW uses in all his race cars that he builds for the SPEC E46 series. It's noticeably smoother when shifting.

Red Line told me D6 most closely meets the BMW OE fluid specs ,meaning it's thin. Shifts probably wouln't be an smoother with it,then.

I do plan on testing the RL fluid when I change it out to compare.

.
Wonder how the D4 in winter temps will affect your shifting with the thicker fluid.

I have about 23k more miles and I will let you know. Late December through mid March are the coldest months here in Sunny South Carolina. I always let things warm up before I have fun so I'm not too concerned about that really.
