I've always found them more annoying than beneficial, and actually cost me money when I unknowingly crossed the border into Virginia where they are illegal and got hit w/ a $100 ticket.

I run without one, and have since the late 1990s.

Main reason is the vast majority of LEOs in North Texas (as well as TxDPS troopers) use laser, which is instant. If you're tagged, you're screwed. No detector can help you there (and, in fact, it can hurt you if the LEO sees it in your car). Waze helps, but I personally hate the look and function the app (cartoonish icons, sponsors I can't get rid of on the map, etc.), so I don't bother.

Secondary reason is if you're smart and observant, you'll know when to speed and when not to. I learned this riding sportbikes. The one ticket I got as a rider was stupidstupidstupid: 79 in a 60 in a rural area via TxDPS on a July 4. Tagged me coming off the crest of a hill -- and probaby well above 80, but the officer gave me a break because of the holiday and the fact that there was no one else on the road. (What he didn't know was I was spooling down from 105 or so ... ). Why was I so stupid? I was riding with a gal on a CBR600, basically on a first date, hehe ... I probably got a break because of that, too!

... I can see, in certain areas and situations, where a detector comes in handy. But it can do just as much harm as good, IMHO.

Just today. Cruising 85 in an 80. Guy passes me going 100 or so. Next peak detector goes crazy. At the bottom of the hill a mile or so away the guy is pulled over. Radar is still running. For all the talk of instant on, laser, etc. in western CO I see the majority who leave the radar running 100% of the time. I'm looking for them long before they see me.

Do the Passport Max or Redline filter out the in-car radars (lane detect/parking assist)? That is my main concern, since the highway is soon to be full of these (probably already is).

My redline doesn't have an issue at all

And the flip side of that: many LEOs will likely stop using radar altogether in favor of either lidar (laser), remote traps (i.e. speed cameras), or good ol' fashioned pacing. That will make detectors even less worthwhile to use.

Remember that a LEO can't clock you unless he has clear line of sight and clear air. Neither radar or laser works in rain or mist, through foilage, or in relatively heavy traffic. (Another tip: follow a speeding car. LEO can't tag you if you're behind someone else -- and you'll save gas! )

2020 BMW X4MC  [0.00]
16' BMW X4 M40i  [10.00]
06 Cadillac STS  [0.00]
I've been a Escort user for about 4yrs now.
6 months with 9500xi; 3yrs with Redline ; Max360 since Christmas 16'

I prefer the GPS & Auto-lock out in the max360 along with the arrows, but I prefer the Ka?laser detection in the Redline + size + color.

Just recent, Uniden came out with a new radar which suppose according to some test finally beat the best. Check out on youtube VortexRadar, Uniden R3.

For $400 i'm definitely selling either my Redline or Max360 for the latest/greatest.
