any dealership mechanics here? do you use a checklist?
Specifically, anyone that test drives the car after an oil change. (or a manager over this dept)
What are the guidelines to "testing" the car after an oil change? I know the car is driven for a short distance to make sure no warning codes, etc.. is there a checklist of what BMW dealerships do and/or are looking for during this check? for example: press the brake and the gas at the time time floor it from a stop multiple times test traction control works brake hard test speakers work Can anyone speak towards whats supposed to be happening or the expected process after an oil change and before giving back to the owner? Edit/ Well i have not had time to start a dedicated thread about this so here is a longer clip with the dealership info in case anyone is interested. lesson learned - skip the free wash and dont let the car out of sight. Did all those things: brake & gas same time, flooring it - happen when you took your car in for service?
I'm about to take my car in and...well, should I be concerned ? |

Other than checking that the oil/fluids are correct and not leaking I really dont want them driving my car... I definitely do not want them flooring it etc as you mentioned. I always tell whoever works on my car that I have documented the mileage and if it moves more than about 1 to 2 tenths there will be trouble. There are just too many issues of dealership employees abusing customers cars.

Depends on your relationship with your dealer. there are some good ones out there, I just haven't found them yet. keep the car in sight and you shouldn't have anything to worry about. All 3 dealers near me have bad reviews and so far I have ruled out 2 of them with my own personal experience. I guess its on to the third and next time wont let it leave my sight. |

I’m in Georgia, around the Atlanta area. After having time to watch the entire footage I think I’d have been okay if I just didn’t get the complimentary wash. This provided the opportunity for someone to take it for a joyride around the block as well as adding an hour to my wait time. The car was done with its service in 30 mins but I waited an hour more than that while it was beat on and then washed. Normally I would not get the car wash mostly in fear of scratches and swirls on the paint but I had it CQuartz’d and was less concerned of that so was testing the waters....
9:15: drop off the car 9:33: pop the hood 9:49: done with services – this is where it should have been handed back over to me but instead was taken for a joy ride then took another 50 mins to be washed. 10:44: Car parked after wash 10:49: Returned to owner My personal mechanic would never handle my car this way; they took the utmost care of my old Bimmer for all the years I took it to them. I wish I could get the rest of my “free services” done by them and never go back to a dealership…. Nothing but horror stories for any dealership I ever went to. Is it because I’m too sensitive about how my car is handled? Or is it because I have cameras in my car and can see what most people don’t? Watch the quick 1 min clip that highlights how the car was cared for while I was waiting that extra hour, and you tell me if it’s okay for someone else to treat your car like this. Out of respect for the dealer, and while I discuss this matter with them further, I cut out the parts that show the dealer name and any employees faces. The clip I sent the dealer is about 5 mins long. Last edited by soghetto; 06-27-2015 at 12:44 PM.. |

That is so unacceptable - if they say that's normal tech procedure then tell them it will be posted on line what to expect at that dealership - and that is no kind of test - it's a lot of nerve to take someone else's car and do that.

not to mention the liability if they were to get into an accident with my car. I had no complaints or concerns about drivability or a lack of power when I dropped it off, there was no reason to put the car on the road.
true story and one of my past horror stories about a dealership - I'm 19 years old and purchase a 1999 Passat,....dropped it off to the dealer for some TSB or warranty work one day. I get a loaner and drive to my job. While I'm there my mom calls and says the cops came to the house because my car was involved in a hit and run. She told the cops the car was in the shop and I was at work.. they then went to the dealership. come to find out, the service guy took my car for a "test drive" and tapped a kid on a bicycle - they said the kid was okay, didn't fall or anything like that, just looked at him and then kept on going. Some bystander saw it as a hit and run and called the cops with my tag. this is the same dealership that I caught deliberately braking and vandalizing my car while on their lot. this is before most people had cameras or the sense to record the condition of the car when dropping it off. They thought they could brake shit and then tell me it was like that and charge me to replace it. I have not been to a single dealership that I dont have some story about how they did something very sketchy or outright illegal. If i didn't have a dash cam, id have given this dealership a good rating... Id take away some points for making me wait over an hour but I would have thought the service was good and the car was well cared for while there. |

After an incident like this, I think I may be convinced to find an incognito dashcam

the thing is, its not even incognito... its right there under the rear view mirror and its a Blackvue dr650gw-2ch.
I like it. its wireless so I can stream video real time or download clips to my cellphone on demand. Comes with another camera for the rear that gets power from a remote cable you link up front. you can swipe your finger across the side to toggle voice recording on/off. |

My dashcam isn't incognito at all.
It's near the bottom of the windshield w/ a plug hanging out of it trailing all the way into the cigarette lighter. Hopefully this deters people from driving my car like an ass. |

Never saw anything untoward on the front, but still, the automatic "unplug it" got me thinking.

This was at Nalley BMW of Decatur and I will post a newer longer video in a new thread when I have the time. Works been very busy and this has been a lower priority in the grand scheme of things... I do however, want to make people aware of the dealership and its practices so will put something out there for sure. |

+1 for sending the video to BMW NA with copies of your emails to the dealership. I might understand the mechanic test driving post oil change, but the wash guy? No way. That's no way to treat a customer's vehicle from ANY dealership or brand!
Also, repost the video on YouTube with the dealers name in the title. That'll get their attention. Now I'm worried about my first oil change this Saturday... |
