I'd like to buy a 2-series, but I'm 6'5" and definitely want to be able to sit comfortably (no concern for helmet space though, I don't plan on doing anything like that). I see a lot of mixed thoughts in my search results here on the topic.

Currently living in a small town in Louisiana, with no used 2014-2016 228i to try out anywhere near me.

There is one 2018 230i at a dealership near me. It has a moonroof and powered seat. Will that be identical in headroom to a comparably spec'd 2014-2016 228i?

Any 6'3"+ drivers out there have thoughts on fitting in their 2-series with or without the moonroof/powered seat?

There is no change on headroom between the '14/'15 models and the the '18 model. I have a buddy who is 6'2" who was surprised with the headroom in the car. He clears by a few inches but, you're 6'5" so it might be close.

I almost feel like I'd want the moonroof deletion regardless just for simplicity and road noise's sake, but when I'm already restricting my search to manual 6-speeds, I can't be too picky!

Oh, the new 2018 one has sport seats. Does that affect how high/low you sit at all?

I have the sport seats in an M-Sport model.

I am 6' 1 with the powered seats and moonroof and already find myself with only 2" or so of space before hitting the roof, but I have a longer torso. If you are mostly legs, you may be good. A moonroof delete will probably be safest for you to fit.

You need to order one without the moonroof. You'll gain over 2" in head room. I love have the extra space over my head (I'm almost 6' 2").

In addition to your height, if you have size 12 or larger shoes, you might find the footwell tight as well, especially if you want a manual.

Squeaking by at size 11.5... haha. Thank you for the input. I'll definitely be looking for no moonroof - not to order though, lol, I wish!

It depends on how long your torso is. I'm 6'5 and my hair brushes against the headliner if I sit very straight/tall. Otherwise, no issues (15 M235i with roof). If you have a long torso, then it will be tight. I didn't fit the first time I went to test drive one (same with 4 series). I went back and adjusted my seating position and now I fit.

That said, I am still working on finding that "perfect" driving position (3 weeks in). It's close, but I haven't quite found it.

I am 6' 2.5" and my hair touched the moonroof. I do have long torso.
I have moonroof delete and I would suggest same to you.
It will give you 1.9" more headroom.

6'2" with size 13 shoes. 41" hip (pelvic crest)-to-heel...33" hip-to-head. I fit under the sunroof with no problem and my feet move around on the 3 pedals without being confined.

I think the 2-series has a reasonable footwell size with perfect pedal spacing for heel-toe operation. VW Golf is a little wider, but could actually benefit from having a narrower footwell as the turning circle is awful due to the small wheel wells, it also is a bit far from the brake to throttle for good heel-toe operation. If you want to see a tight footwell, I’ve included the Caterham, my size 10 driving shoes are close to the limit of use, but it is perfect for heel-toe operation with the correct shoes and clutch foot scraping the sidewall while the brake foot brushes it.

I have an m235i and am 6’5” with a relatively long torso. No problems other than hair touching when I need a haircut with the right seating position. I certainly wouldn’t be comfortable with the seat back vertical. No problem for my size 13s. I have power sport seats, manual transmission, and sunroof.

i'm 6' 4" and have a 2019 m240i with sunroof. I also had a 2015 m235i the past 3 years with a sunroof. I have maybe an inch or two of headroom so not too much to spare but works for me. I do think i tend to prefer a more leaned back seating position than most though. I do track my car periodically and my helmet does rub on the headliner a bit which is kind of annoying.

Make sure you work the controls to fully lower the seat. When I was test driving I didn't know this at first, and the seats had been set high. My last car just had basic fore-aft and rear angle, so it was a huge relief to figure this out and realize I'd actually fit in a 2'er. You'll probably have better luck finding a moonroof delete on a MT car, as those would go together nicely, but it will also be more likely to have been tracked some. Good luck, it will be worth the hunt (or use your man-math skills to tally up how much you'll save by getting a new one w/ the maintenance and warranty intact; we're getting into discount season if it anything like the usual cycle ).

I found a CPO 2016 228i with MT, moonroof delete, and 32k miles. Dealer is asking $25,700 when the KBB range shows $21,900-$24,900, but maybe I have to pay a premium to get exactly what I want. It's also 1000 miles away so there's no test driving before I'd have to fly out... scary but exciting!

Don't be put off by whatever the dealer may be asking; that's just how they play. If you like the car, figure its worth to you, and then negotiate based on your research.

Most importantly, don't let on how badly you want it, or you're screwed.

Lastly, you might hire someone independent in that market to evaluate the car, if you come to terms otherwise.

My '16 228 x-drive has about 26k and dealer is sending me 'trade it in for 20k' mailings sight unseen, so they probably have less than that in this one. To a dealer, an MT with no moonroof is a dog that they will have a hard time moving (that also means no x-drive, which is usually a value-adder). I'd start by lowballing them a little from what bluebook says (not a good color for you, you think it was tracked, why doesn't it have the full tech pckg, etc). Also have a few things in mind that they can throw in that won't cost them msrp - extended warranty/maintenance, new summer tires, M-performance exhaust, etc. I'd also get a written price before you fly out, or they may play games w/ you one you land, and 'the other guy who is about to buy it, so you have to act fast' is the oldest cliché in car sales. Oh, and get a recc for a good chiropractor, 'cause if it works out you'll need somebody to reset your jaw from grinning so hard after that 1000 mile trip back .

I'm 6'5" and have a long torso. Just did the Performance Drive Center in July with many of the sequences in a 240M with no issues concerning headroom. Can't complete say whether it had a moonroof as I was focused on other issues. Was mighty impressed with the car as a whole.

Thank you so much! I definitely plan on having any car I buy put on a lift and inspected. The dealers seem to claim that having a MT is "rare" and act like it adds value, but I can definitely see by price trends and book estimates that it decreases selling prices by a bit. This is my first ever car purchase so I'm not totally fluent in the back-and-forth game, but I'll do my best not to fall for any of the classic tricks/pressure. But it is hard to argue that I'm not "that crazy" about a car when I'm inquiring from across the country!

Hi OP,

I'm the opposite of you at 5'6", but My other half is 6'3" with size 13 shoe and has no problems driving our 2. We also have a friend that is 6'6" with size 15 shoe who also has no major issues driving the car. I see you're near Baton Rouge, and the local dealer there does have a 2 coupe to test drive. I'd go there first and spend a good amount of time with the car to make sure you feel comfortable in it before flying anywhere. Best of luck!
