I guess it would be little more difficult to swap in M235 than M240.

Only if the CAC breaks in M240, then it's a trouble.

Lmao I just came to the forums to see if this was a common problem as my charge pipe just blew on the way to work today. What seems to be the recommended replacement that's more durable than OEM?

I was able to drive just fine after mine popped off actually, it just felt like it was in semi-limp mode. I didn't know what had actually happened until I got home and took a look under the hood. Could I have done any damage driving w/o it connected?

Does the charge pipe break frequently even without modifications? I know it becomes an issue once you start adding power.

My exact question: how many folks without power mods have suffered this problem?
No manufacturer builds cars for modification.

Yes, they do break even without power modifications. In stock cars, they tend to break with higher miles. Typically 3+ years. Those that track the cars tend to see higher failures. Probably because of the constant boost and high underhood temps.

I promptly blew mine after flashing a tune on it around 48K, I think. Once the chargepipe breaks, you're still able to drive but you won't have boost.

I upgraded charge/boost pipes prior to tuning because this is a known weak point.

I will now tell you with experience, this should be be done before adding more than factory boost tables. If you haven't yet, do it! your on borrowed time.

My buddy has a 15 X4 35i 19k on it. We loaded bootmod3 stage 1 on 91 octane. 3 days later the top of the charge pipe- throttle body side blew a chunk out of the end.

Don't be cheap, spend the additional $$ up front and upgrade the charge pipes. not a matter if, but when...

Yep, it basically become naturally aspirated. You'll likely be able to get around but at much reduced power. Basically no positive pressure will make it to the intake valves.

You think it'd be an issue with just a Dinan Sport Tune with boost set at +3?

Mine must have been built on a Wednesday. Survived 3 years on JB4 Map 2, and a couple weeks on Bootmod3. Replaced both when I did my intercooler swap.

135i - charge pipe blew about 15000 miles. Running 400hp at crank.
M235i - charge pipe blew about 12000 miles. Stock.

Both times, same situation. Ground was slightly wet, grip wasn’t optimal. Did a kickdown and the rpm shot up. Heard a loud “pop” and that’s it. Could still drive but could feel the significant loss of power.

Anyone know? IIRC, I read somewhere here that the M240 has a metal pipe, but that might just be wishful remembering on my part.

Doing both at the same time saves a good bit of labor and the VRSF version should be much more durable.
I have a 235 amd am pushing e85 added boost. You have a 228 so I wouldn’t imagine they blow them as much. I have 3 blown pipes sitting in my storage unit.

One more day under original warranty - stock 235 - charge pipe blew under relatively modest boost while passing on the highway.

I would say yes. My charge pipe self destructed at 27,000 miles. I have the Dinantronics Performance Tuner Stage 2 with Dinan Cold Air Intake.
The BMW dealership service writer said charge pipe failures are becoming more common around the Las Vegas area.
BTW I would like to say thank the Los Vegas BMW service writer and mechanics for their excellent work and professionalism.

So I'm assuming under hotter conditions when air expands there is a greater chance of failure? I'm in the NW where the the heat doesn't get too bad save for 2 months of the year.

Did the charge pipe actually crack or bust? I'm curious if it just breaks from the seal or the actually pipe cracks.
