Michelin PS4 92Y vs SS 88Y

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to replace my summer tires (currently have Michelin Super sports). Stock staggered setup, 18 inch wheels. I was wondering if the 92 load index of the new Pilot Sport 4s front tires would impact comfort and make it noticeably firmer than the stock 88 SS.

Another option would be to only replace my front tires and stay with the SS. (My rear SS still have 5 to 6/32 left). I've read that the PS4 is a quieter tire than the SS, which I have found to be pretty noisy, so I'm leaning toward putting on PS4s.

Thanks for the help.

I’m getting ready to replace my PSS with 4S also. I got a quote from Costco for $957 installed with tax (8%). I never even checked the load rating when I got the quote so I need to research that. I would actually prefer a little stiffer front as my fronts had significant wear on the outside at 6,000 miles. I took the pressure up to about 36 which helped wear a little but the PSS outside tread is butter soft. Even had BMW check my alignment and was within specs. I have the same tires as you, staggered 18’s on a 2014 M235. I’m only at 13,000 miles and my PSS’s are shot. Right rear always loses traction under hard exceleration and fronts have been crap since 6,000 miles.

Interesting. I currently have a set of michelin alpin pa4 winter tires on it, which have been very good this winter, and are also very quiet.

My front Super Sports are also heavily worn on the sides, and traction hasn't been that great. Never used them when they were new though.

Leaning toward the 4s right now.

just ordered the 4s's based on reviews I read saying they had soft sidewalls to begin with and were much quieter and better than the super sports. also chatted with tirerack who said it'd be a very minor difference if any.

Interesting observation, might also relate to the diff between the BMW star-spec and regular versions (IIRC, the star-spec PS2's were just a touch lighter?, didn't think to compare load ratings). I went w/ Conti's b/c I wanted max wet traction, but the generally poor wear on the Michelin's only reinforced the decision (we'll see how long they last - the Conti RFT's it came with were also crap for wear - replacing them at less then 10k of summer use b/c they are chopping badly enough to be real annoying).

digging this up from the crypt because i have to replace my tires too.

any new insights after replacing the PSS with PS4S or Contis??

After reading a few tire reviews, I might stick with the PSS because the PS4S is even softer and the Contis too (with less performance).

In general, one is going to feel the difference 92Y vs 88Y. At least, it's the case with the Super Sports as the 92Y version is slightly wider and stiffer. (slightly more grip, more stable at higher speeds, a bit less comfort).

I am not sure, though, what difference one is going to notice when switching to PS 4s because it's a new tire with more tread and slightly different properties.

I couldn't find ps4 listed for our rear sizes? Currently the tyres I have are from new MPSS all round and have 5mm tread on all sides.

I'm running Conti Extremecontact Sports, and loving them; long-time Conti fan, but also chose them for the better wearing and better wet traction. 5 days on track and one autocross, and the outer shoulders show wear but not worn out (the outer grooves have lost the outer 1/8 inch). Fully stock, so no camber adjustment, and I'm not exactly Bill Auberlen. I've never run the Michelins, but from the online comparisons, they were almost tied w/ the Michelins (better for wet braking/traction IIRC, and a little less for dry). Also about $100 cheaper than the Michelins. About to swap to my winter tires, which is always a bit of a bummer.

No change in comfort, switched to the 4S with 92 Y vs the 88y and I really can’t tell a difference. Put about 400 miles on them so far and I hope the fronts hold up better than the MPSS which wore out on the outside ( yes alignment was in spec).
