Bought a car with CarPlay, dealer says add’l purchase required
Hey,
Hoping someone can help me with this. I bought a 2018 M240i for my wife. On the window sticker, it had the $299 CarPlay option. I tried setting it up, but the only options in ConnectedDrive are phone and Bluetooth. She called the dealer, and the salesman told her the $299 CarPlay option doesn’t get you CarPlay, but just allows the vehicle to support it. Any truth to this? I emailed BMW of NA, but haven’t heard back. The connectedDrive menu is blank, and I can’t setup connectedDrive on the website, so I suspect the dealership screwed up and never activated it when we picked the car up.

Seems like it has it according to the VIN. I would contact BMW USA or the Connected Drive help.

I believe it switched to a subscription service at some point, so you buy the option then pay a monthly or annual access fee.

As I understand it, the $299 charge is to activate CarPlay on models that are not subject to BMW's yearly-subscription CarPlay model, which took effect on later 2018 models. On those later models, CarPlay is free for the first year and there is no 'activation' charge for it -- much like how the models for Sirius radio and RTTI on Nav work.
IOW, OP: If the window sticker shows $299 and you paid that $299, you have a car that is NOT subject to the yearly subscription model. If your dealer is trying to get more money out of you, it is attempting to double-charge you -- and you need to involve BMW NA.

Rick Hendrick BMW (not the dealership we purchased from) managed to resolve everything in a couple days. I’m seriously pissed at BMW of Myrtle Beach for not properly setting it up in the first place. Additionally, they charged me for sales tax that I wasn’t required to pay due to being out-of-state military.
