NY state Tinted Windows Law

The law went into affect Jan 1 and today got pulled over for the first time to remove tints from my car and of course not being able to pass state inspection with tinted windows.

How many other have to remove their tints from their car now?

Thats terrible, im sorry to hear that... in Ohio officers are fairly lax on tint but just depends on what officer wants to pull you over and what kind of day they want to have.

That seems like something that should be grandfathered in like if you can prove it was legal and done before the new law you're ok.

What law just went into effect?

I'm in NY and the legal limit has been (as far as I know), 70% on side windows and anything on the rear window. That's pretty close to what comes on the car from factory anyway, so the law really means "no tint" in the first place.

Is it some new kind of enforcement?

***edit***

Some googling told me that the new law applies to safety inspections as well. That sucks super bad.

Really sucks.

My car just doesn't feel the same at all. It's sad to see it now which to lost people seems stupid but it's really bothering me

I don't get the law fully I was told all the tints have to be removed.

Nothing on any of the windows of a car and only SUVs ca have their back windows done. 70% is like having nothing at all and this just seems drastic

What's the logic behind allowing SUV's to have darker tint than sedans/coupe? It's like that in a lot of states, and I don't get it.

Logic is that most SUV's already got the rear windows tinted from the factory

a cop always could give you a ticket for tint.

As far as inspection, go make friends with someone who owns a shop. I know 4 places that are not adhering to the new tint laws locally.

Naw....NY is broke...this generates revenue

NY has a bad habit of making criminals out of law abiding folks with the stroke of a pen

Not hopeful it will be successful, but at least doing my part.

They want to see the driver (cell phone, distracted driving, approaching the vehicle after stop), so no tint. This is also a very easy way for an officer to get probable cause to pull you over, that and license plate are big in NY for stops.

If you do get pulled over and your car is heavily tinted roll all the windows down before the officer approaches. This is not to hide the tint, rather so they can see the occupants. You might get away with a warning.

The law has been on the books forever, what is new is the yearly inspection requires a tint meter test. Most any car in NYS with aftermarket tint on the front windows will fail, no questions about it. OEM tint from some cars will even fail. Some shops may not care, but that's the minority.

Having an inspection sticker on a car that is obtained fraudulently is criminal possession of a forged instrument in the Second Degree in NYS.

Other charges (shop side) include issuing a false certificate, and illegal issuance of an emission certificate of inspection.

All that on top of the ridiculous state and property taxes in NY, no thanks.

Tint hasn't been legal in NYS since 1992, so the 2 Series can't exactly be "grandfathered in".
