BMW not covering bent rim
Last week I hit a pothole which damaged my driver and passenger side front tires. Tears in the sidewall and some light rim damage. I have the bmw tire and rim package including cosmetic so I took my car in to the dealer to have the tires replaced and rim repaired. Got a call from my dealer that the rim is slightly bent and they can't get it to balance, however they will not be covering a replacement because the rim is not bent enough to be leaking air. Has anyone had this issue and recommend what I can do? Seems unfair that I paid for the insurance and they are not covering the damage because it's not severe enough by their standards.

will u say which dealer ? is there a written contract to quote from ?
is the dealer saying the wheel is good enough that you can use it as is or is the dealer recommending a new wheel ? I just read the BMW wheel tire warranty on line where it says 'prevents tire from sealing to wheel' - damn that's pointless. Is there additional text in the warranty you signed ? Easy fix: take the car for a drive and find a bigger pothole.

Yes, the wheel and tire coverage fine print says the wheel has to be unusable before they'll replace it. The technical term for this is "bullshit".

If you have cosmetic coverage, why not just go and curb your wheel with a huge scrape. At that point, they'll have to pay for the repair and since it's already bent, it would make sense to just replace it.

Fricking "mice type". Always the case, even w/ extended warranties.

I don't get it. If they can't get the wheel balanced, then it is unusable, no?
I have the package and have used it several times on both wheels and tires, to the point where it has paid for itself, but I have never had enough wheel damage to warrant replacement, only cosmetic repair, which has always been very well done. In all likelihood, the insurance is not through BMW but through a third party. Get out your contract, call the number, and talk to someone at the insurance company. |

I had a similar experience last winter; went through a pothole that was filled with water...no idea how deep it was. Ended up splitting the right front wonderful RF tire. The dealer replaced the tire (my cost - no insurance) and showed me the bent wheel. He suggested sending it out to have it straightened. It worked.
I strongly suggest that method before buying a new wheel. GL. |

On the bright side this wheel and tire package has now covered 4 tires in the first 12 months of ownership. So feel there has been some value out of it. |

Just fyi discount tire also has a tire warranty for about 20-30 per tire. It sounds like you would have to completely destroy a rim for the bmw warranty to take effect, but not sure how this is helpful, as damage that severe you can probably use your car insurance anyways.

It is important to realize that these warranty packages do not come from BMW. The dealer is a broker for an insurance company and the packages differ from insurer to insurer. OP clearly got a lousy package, which apparently does not cover cosmetic damage. A good package will run close to $2000 for 5 years, but it is worth it if you take the rims in regularly for cosmetic repair. And yes, these cars eat tires, especially the 19" rims.
