Thermostat Failure

Car: 2014 228i 36k miles

I was driving home from work and my CEL decides to light up. Got ahold of a scan tool and read the code....P0597 (Thermostat). Took the car into my local BMW service center, $167 diagnostic fee to read the code!! Luckily, the fee is waived since my car is CPO. I recalled receiving a letter about the extended limited warranty regarding the thermostat for our cars and the dealer acknowledged. Long story short, dealer ended up replacing the thermostat at no cost, covered under warranty. Surprised it failed at such low mileage, has anyone else had their thermostat replaced?

Yup, mine failed about a month ago. Car barely made it to 25k yesterday. It's also CPO so I had it done free. They didn't try to charge me for diagnostic fee on that, but they found leak on air intake that they tried to charge me on. "fixing the leak" was free but they tried to charge me 1.5 hrs labor for "identifying the issue." It makes no sense they'd charge for something that's 1. easily found with fault code 2. covered under warranty. I got the charge removed in the end but I'd absolutely fight to remove charge if they tried again.

Oh wow!!

I just came up on this thread. I think I am having the same experience right now with my 2014 228i f22 N20.

Got the same engine fault code...and made an appointment at dealer service for tomorrow.

Unfortunately, I already started a thread on my issue. See link...as I will be updating there. I just HOPE my N20 is covered by the 10yr / 120,000 mile warranty...even though I am second owner of car.

Did you guys notice any difference in driving characteristics or was it just the CEL with no symptoms?

In my case, no symptoms. Just the check engine light. Probably because it has failed in the OPEN position as designed. But, this is a moment when it would be awesome if we had a temp gauge. Instead of the temp light.

If failed in the closed, then your engine would rapidly overheat and serious engine damage could occur.

It should be covered! All f22 N20 owners I believe got an additional limited warranty on the Thermostat and Timing Chain courtesy of BMW. You should of received something in the mail. I am also the second owner.

I noticed no difference in driving characteristics either. As biz4two mentioned the thermostat is designed to fail in the open position. From my research all that comprises is it takes the car a little longer to get up to operating temperature. Opposite (closed) would cause the car to overheat.

Again, as everyone has mentioned it is a shame there is no engine or oil temp gauge!

Reviving this thread.

My shop tells me the thermostat on my 2016 228i with the N26 has to be replaced.

Is there any chance arguing with BMW to replace it under the extended warranty (https://testing-public.carmd.com/Tsb...0B01%2017%2017) or should I just go ahead and have the shop take care of it?
