XHP Reflash after transmission service?

Hi everyone,

I did some searching on here and Google and couldn't find the specific scenario I'm looking for info on.

I had a shop do a trans service on my car, changing out fluid and doing the pan/filter replacement. My car has been flashed to XHP stage 3 for the past 1000 miles or so.

Question: do I need to do any unflashing or reflashing with XHP with this service being performed or just leave it?

Thank you- JM

Pretty sure you do not need to unflash or reflash xhp by only changing out the oil and filter. It doesnt change much more than making it smoother

That's what I was thinking. The shifts do feel smoother but I have heard the whining noise a couple few/times randomly accelerating in a couple different gears. That did not happen before the service. Sounds like that is a normal thing for the 8 speed auto trans.

That does not sound normal especially if it happen only after a service, I would highly question that service. Did you do it or did you have a shop do it? Are they a reputable shop? If they did not properly shift through all the gears, that might be a possible cause.. I would personally take it back to the shop if its a shop that does it

Yes a local and reputable shop did it. Honestly I "think" I heard it whine. Just paranoid I think. I also "think" my exhaust sounds different. Honestly being sleep deprived and trying to analyze my car is not a good mix. Will drop off the car for a further look if things don't seem right after driving some more.

All I did was reset the adaptations. New filter/fluid, new adaptations.

That's just my preference.

This will bring up a whole new sets of discussion.

I read somewhere in the past, the adaptations is supposed to adapt to your wear and tear in the systems. If you reset it by just doing filter/fluid, wouldnt that messed everything up?

At the same time, the adaptations adapt to the old filter/fluid which is probably rougher. So when that changes, wouldnt that needs to be reset?

I drove around a bit last night and went through all my gears, cornering, etc. What I am noticing now-- very randomly-- is that there is a whine when accelerating in 1st gear. I first heard it turning in 1st gear and thought maybe that was the sound of the clutch engaging in my LSD. Then tried the same turn in 1st gear and speed and no noise. Super random but feels like it is the transmission. Bringing the car back to the shop for a once over.

Anyone have a link to a step-by-step DIY guide for changing the ZF8 ATF & pan/filter?

Had a one-man shop do it for me the first time around at 42k miles and it didn't take long. Figure I'd give it a try while I'm under there to change the oil.

You are NOT supposed to reset trans adaptions after a service. Only do that if you have a trans rebuilt or replaced with a new one. Thats very very bad..

If you have issues after a service its likely an issue where the trans isn't at fluid capacity.

Timely thread.
I also had my trans serviced recently at ~50K mi. at a local BMW dealer.
And, I also think I heard a whine under acceleration that I didn't hear before.
You'd think they would have topped it off properly, but maybe I should bring it back to have them check, just to be sure.

Edit: I did not re-flash xHP or reset adaptations.

The shop that did my trans service took the car back in for a 2nd look and checked everything all was good including the fluid level. I may have BMW take a look next time the car is in for an oil change. Hopefully they don't give me too much grief with my engine and trans flash tunes.

I haven't heard the whine in a couple weeks and no drivability issues for me.
