Hi mate, just thinking, how about just adding 1/2 to 3/4 of a liter. Then check the oil level again.I myself don't like to be at the min. or at max.On my last "Dipstick car" (2001 330ci) I always kept the oil level just below the max. Also don't forget that a liter is more than a quart.Just saying.

I would let it warm up and see if it is burning oil or any leaks, if not drive it slow and low rpm for a bit and see if power feels the same. If all is good, your ok for now. Problems may not show up for a long time if ever. One guy I know with a 911 turbo changed his oil, forgot to drain the dry sump and added 12 quarts. Well that ended with 28k in damage and they chased issues for months. He traded it in. |

I don't really think a dipstick is needed If you have any mechanical experience and trust the electronics which these cars are built around. Maybe BMW engineers should add a dipstick and a sight glass on the pan as well...? Or maybe a elf that can come to you when you add double the required amount of oil and smack you in the nuts to let you know you have done wrong. If the car warned of low oil the last thing anyone with any kind of knowledge would do is add 5/6th the amount of oil the motor holds after an oil change. Clearly OP should not maintain his car without some experience. Hope i didn't offend anyone but i feel im not too off base here.. |

All dip sticks have Min and Max and it's always about 1lt difference
Having dip stick is nice but electronic system is safer and easier to check. That of course if it works 100% On many cars low oil light means engine is almost dry and probably damaged already |

You're trolling, right? If your car was 5L low on oil it would seize up. I don't get how someone could do this "accidentally". The internet never fails to surprise me.

Sometimes while doing oil change I always think that you could drain the oil and in the rush forget to put oil back in. But I guess the car will immediately show a warning |

Tbh a back up dip stick would be lovely, currently I’m running in a similar issue with my e92… the doesn’t have a single leak, yet it asked for 1 liter of oil. I added the oil like 2 weeks ago and now it started smoking lightly… it asked for oil in the past in some situations where I wasn’t sure wether it was a oil sensor issue or actually running out of oil. So a dip stick in this situation would have helped me narrow the issue down. |
