I'm at 71K miles nearly 6 years into ownership. I still really enjoy driving my M235 vert with MT so I don't have plans to trade anytime soon. My truck has 85K miles and will likely be the first vehicle in our "fleet" needing to be replaced, even though it's the "newest".

If my 2016 was a manual, I'd surely never get rid of it.

I'm striking a balance. I want to have it a long time so don't want to accumulate high mileage. I also don't take it to places where congested parking could result in door dings, etc. to keep it original. I have another daily driver. I'm aiming for classic status over decades, but I drive it when the mood strikes or the situation is conducive.

My prior post was not meant to be about not reaching 100k miles. It was just the realization of how far past my lifetime it would be.

My situation is similar, and I certainly drive mine every time I feel like it.

However, with the wife's Mazda 3 available for DD, the short trips that I typically take (1.6 mi. - 80%, 0.3 mi. - 10%, 7.8 mi. - 5%), and the generally tight parking at each of those destinations (1 golf course, 2 groceries), the MZ3 is the logical choice for this 2 Series owner.

Yea, to each their own. But your car is a depreciating asset, you'll lose money on it no matter what. I used to have Corvettes and barely drove them, fretted over where I parked, all that. Then I got a Miata and learned to enjoy my sports car for what it is, a fun automobile. When I moved to my F23, I carried that with me. I don't drive it as much in the winter as I do in the summer, but it's no garage queen. In winter I use it when I need it, regardless of the weather. In summer I drop the top and drive it as much as possible. For me, the fun is in the driving.

The finances are of no concern whatsoever. I'll never sell it anyway. Keeping this car for the rest of my time, enjoying it periodically, and passing it to my son are the priorities. I also enjoy whatever I get for my daily driver, so all trips are good.

You have big dreams. None of the 2 Series will ever be collectibles. The 1M will be the only one of the small BMWs.

As for your son, I am not sure he will care when you will be gone. Trust me, i already have experience in this matter and I am fully alive and well.

I distinguish between “classic” and “collectible”, which has implications of financial value. I don’t care about that. It won’t be for sale. If you attend meets with throngs of old 1600 and 2002 models, those, to me, are “classic”. That’s all I aspire to for a rwd, 6MT, 4 cylinder ICE that will seem increasingly quaint as EVs replace ICE vehicles. A run-of-the-mill 2002 didn’t seem to hold much promise as a future classic during its production but was very appreciated for its classic design even by the 1990s. This will likely happen again.

As for my son, he’s already quite “in” for this. It’s been discussed. I see no reason to expect your experience to be predictive of mine with such different people involved.

I've bought my M240i brand new in 2017, it will probably cross 80,000 miles by year end. I intend to keep it as my daily driver if my allocation for a 718 GT4 comes through. The only two ways that will change is if the track bug bites me to the point that I decide to buy a trailer and obviously a tow vehicle for the GT4 or if the GT4 allocation doesn't work out I'll put in for another P car and the same will apply.

Hey, you'd be proud of me – I drove mine yesterday!

It was a nice day out, and all I had to do to get ready was clean the bugs off the windshield from when I parked it in late October after returning from a trip to Pittsburgh. No bugs yesterday, though.

I've spent a decent amount on mods making a good car great. It really does everything quite well for a sporty 4 seater. The only way I'll part with this car is if the stock market improves substantially in the next year or two then I'll likely sell it and get a 2017-2018 M2 DCT. I absolutely love the F22 chassis and the F87 (M2) is as good as you can make it plus many of my parts would transfer over. I love the power and simplicity of the EWG N55 too. I know the B58 and S55 are amazing motors, but a basic Stage 2 N55 is plenty fast for me plus it's generally easy to work on.

I recently bought a base model 2011 Cayman 6MT for a fun car and I have to say that the Cayman makes my M235 feel like a wet porkchop in terms of handling feel and damping control. I had no idea that even in Sport+ with Dinan springs, Bilstein shocks in the back, an LSD, and 245 square rubber that the M235 really just isn't that composed compared to true sportscar. The M2 would address some of that issue.
I just put my 2015 M235i up for sale today. I’ve driven it for 3yrs and put 30k miles on it. It’s been the most fun vehicle I’ve owned but, I’m partial to more agile handling and also have my eye out for a 2011 or 2012 Cayman as a replacement.

100% agree with that assessment of the M240 being a fast car, mediocre steering and handling. I had the opportunity to drive a Porsche GT3 RS on a track a couple months ago. I promise I'm not a douche, was just really lucky to get invited to a work event where racing was paid for! I found myself disappointed in the car in the straight aways thinking "my tuned M240 is way faster than this thing".....but then I got to the corners and was blown away with how it performed. Now when I corner with my 240 I'm less impressed after having driven the GT3.

Probably forever or when I can get a turbo S or M2CS.

I have owned all of the 2's & was lucky enough to weekend our company-owned M2C fresh out of college. After driving the M2C for a year, I convinced myself to trade in my 230i for an m240i (along with my student loans). I drove that for around a year until I was forced off the road by a fallen rock at a BMW rally event and ended up totaling the car. Luckily, the sheriff's department in the middle of nowhere confirmed my story to my insurance.

I spent a lot of time cross-shopping while my insurance appraised the car; M2, m240i, M3, M4, RS3, Caymen S, TTRS, M340i, X3M, pretty much every sports car under 80K. And for the money and the performance, the m240ix was first in its class. The ability to drive in all weather conditions and the switchability of driving modes makes the car feel special in any situation. The thing that really sets the car apart is how small and lightweight the vehicle is compared to powerful six bangers. The 2 can make driving feel like go-carting, even in the most boring driving.

So, the way I see it, if I can't replace the looks, feel, and speed of the m240i with the best version (M2CS) or get the fastest daily (turbo S), I probably will keep it until the gas supply runs out.

I consider my self lucky as the M240 is absolutely the best performing and handling car I have ever driven. That is based on the fact that all I ever drove before, sports car wise, were three Austin Healy Frog Eyed Sprites, a couple of MGAs , one MGB and a Saturn SC2 coupe (MT) before I got my E46. The MGB was a fire sale car that I rebuilt and drove as a daily driver for 12 years. So yes I positively love my M240 and will drive it until I die.

Longgggg longggg time. I have a company vehicle for work that I can use for personal use and work. Short trips, winter or places I don’t want to take the 235i to, I just take the beater with the heater (Chevy Malibu). My wife can also drive the company car, so we kind of do the same thing with her 2018 X3 M40i. 2 series only gets driven in nice weather, so I don’t put a ton of miles on it yearly. It’s all paid for and a manual, so cant see myself getting rid of it.

If I had the cash I would buy one immediately as they are amazing cars. I'd actually go with the GT2 RS though to have some more horsepower. Either that or a Ferrari 488 GTB or Pista.

well, of course...we're enthusiasts! it's one thing to say you're selling your F22 because you want to upgrade to a dream supercar. i just can't abide posts that seem to compare the performance of cars that are separated by a 5x price factor.

Point well taken. It really isn't fair to me to compare the performance of the F22 to the GT3 but one can sure dream. The other silly thing at play here is that if you put me in that GT3 again, and then put a really good driver in my F22 I would be starting at my car's tail lights the whole time and probably getting lapped.
