Kies Crank guard + Accessory Belt Kit DIY GUIDE

Intro:Hello today I will be writing up a guide on how to install the Kies Crank Seal Guard and accessory Bely kit. I recommend doing these installs together along with the oil filter housing gaskets. You are already half way there when you do neither install. This install was done on a 2015 BMW M235i

Vehicle: M235 or any N55 powered vehicle

Benefits: The Kies Crank guard is designed to prevent the drive belt from being sucked into the engine which at the very least will lead to dropping the oil pan and removing crank to remove bits of belt or worst case a new motor is needed. For nearly $150 you are saving thousands down the road.

Tools Needed: flathead, E-10, E-12, T-50, T-60, T-25, Allen key 4mm or smaller, torque wrench.

Install time: 1hour or less

Difficulty level: 3 out of 10

Accessory Belt Kit Install:

Includes: 1x belt tensioner bolt, 1x accessory drive belt, 1x Drive Belt Idler Pulley, 1x Drive Belt Tensioner Assembly

Removal

1. Remove Air intake box - I have a burger intake and all I had to do was loosen clamp and it came off.

2. make a sketch or take pictures of belt placement.

3. Take T-60 and turn Drive Belt Tensioner Clock wise.

4. Stick a allen key that is 4mm or smaller in the hole.

5. remove belt from car

6. Apply tension to tensioner and remove allen key

7. using an E-12 remove bolt holding on tensioner and remove from vehicle

8. remove dust cap from idler pulley

9. use a T-50 to unscrew and remove.

Stop here if you are doing the kies crank guard seal!! if not continue

Install

1. Hand thread new idler pulley and torque to 60 Nm then put dust cover back on.

2. install new tensioner keeping in mind where the notch has to go refer to photos.

3. Install new E-12 bolt and torque to 38 Nm

4. install belt, I started with the harmonic balancer then all the two ridged pulleys and lastly with the idler pulley (DOUBLE CHECK BELT IS PROPERLY SEATED)

5. apply tension to tensioner using T-60 and remove pin.

Kies Crank Guard Install

Includes: 1x Crank Guard Seal, 2x bolts

Follow steps of Accessory removal up until noted stop point.

Optional - removal of Radiator Fan: *makes your life a hell alot easier if you do. I have a aftermarket silicon turbo inlet which made it easy to remove if you do not have one it may me more difficult.

1. Remove T-25 Holding in fan(Passenger side)

2. on driver side there is a tab, push in and pull up on fan.

3. Disconnect fan from harness.

4. pull fan straight up and out of the car.

Install:

1. Using E-10 remove the 8x bolts holding in the harmonic balancer.

2. Pull Harmonic Balancer off and clean both the crank hub and harmonic balancer.

3. Remove the 2 E-12 bolts - refer to photo

4. place on Kies Crank guard - it only seats one way flush against the seal

5. install new bolts - hand tighten first, then torque to 22 Nm

6. Install harmonic balancer

7. screw in the 8x E-10 bolts in a cross pattern - hand tight first then torque to 35 Nm

8. Follow steps to reinstall Drive Belt Tensioner and belt .

9. Enjoy peace of mind driving.

Tips:

1. Use your Phone to visualize what you are doing, if you did not remove the radiator fan(you poor thing) your phone will help you locate the bolts.

MISC

1. If you purchased a used vehicle and was wondering if you could tell if one has been installed you can see it slightly from behind the harmonic balancer the tiny red spec.
