2014 2er Reliability?

Hello all,

Just getting a gauge on how the 2014 model year cars were, particularly the 228i since they're first model years, and have been out the longest. Has anyone got really high mileage on these?

Thanks!

knocking on wood, my 2014 228i M-Sport has been great. Only out of warranty issue was the thermostat. Only in warranty was the exhaust valve. About 55K miles.

I have recently started looking in to the 2 series as a replacement for my 2013 G37s coupe. I have had a 2002 e46, a 2009 e90 and 2009 e92 both of the 328 variety.

Lots of posts on here about 2er reliability but also a lot of specific posts about all the things you will probably have to fix on the 6 cyl turbo versions. Haven't seen a lot about the 4 cylinders except some kind of timing chain issue in 14 and possibly 15.

I would really like to know more about reliability of the older 228s as well. I am retiring in the next couple of years and will be driving less but don't want a money pit when my income goes down.

Last year I bought a 2014 M235i 6MT and until now it's been problem free. This week I discovered oil leaks on the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket, and my charge pipe blew. All of this at 45k miles. Now I've seen that people on here say these are common issues with these cars, but I think it's crap that these items fail so soon.

This is my first German car and I'm ok with the expensive routine maintenance, but to this point the required fixes have been quite unsatisfying.

My 2014 M235i had an auxiliary cooling fan replaced under warranty; other than that it's been 50k miles of problem free driving.

According to Consumer Reports which doesn’t break out the 228 vs M235 separately the 2 Series is rated much better than average for reliability. This is for 2015 because the 2014 was a short model year and they didn’t have enough data. I actually get Consumer Reports and get the auto questionnaire every year. The only negative at all in reliability was power equipment which I assume is windows, gauges and maybe I-drive and accessories.

Interesting, do you know if those items are DIYable?

I'm pretty sure the charge pipe is and I might have tackled the job myself if I had time. The oil leaks were more labor intensive and not something I wanted to mess with. Dealership wanted $2k just for the oil leak repairs, but my local independent shop did all 3 repairs for under $1400. Hooray for the little shops!

Ahh I see. This is the primary thing turning me away from these cars haha, just plain reliability. But the draw of the gauge cluster and driving feel is really enticing!

I've owned a dozen BMW since 1983- from an E24 M6 to an i3. I've found the key to avoiding most expensive repairs is to be fastidious about maintenance. I also have a good indie shop as well as an excellent dealer that doesn't overcharge for service or parts. Yes, VC and OFH gaskets are practically a maintenance item these days, but aside from that my BMWs haven't been all that expensive to maintain.

second this. although, I will say that the ofhg and vcg leaking at 45k is pretty early from my experience.

I’ve owned 16 BMW’s and the last one we traded a 2007 335 convertible was leaking from the valve cover and oil cooler. Independent quoted $1,500 but it had 78,000 miles and was road hard thanks to my son. Had a tune on it which possibly added to the problem but other than that ignition coils was the only minor problem on the N54 engine.

FWIW the 228 was new in 2014 but the engine was not. Had been around in other cars for a bit so the first run kinks were worked out.

I have a 2014 228i M Sport 6MT (production date 5/14) with 23,650 miles. It's been bulletproof so far - nothing needed beyond routine maintenance. I love it.

That's great to hear! I drove a 2014 the other day and one thing that struck me was how rough the start-stop was when it reignites. It's not something I can't live with (if it truly doesn't substantially increase wear) but it's not as pleasant as the newer models it seems.

Just turn it off and leave it off.

In terms of everything outside of the powertrain, are there anything to be weary of from 2014 years compared to later years?

My 2016 is going strong at about 35k miles; I think your main risk will be speeding tickets . Dealer replaced both tail lights for the wiring harness issue, IIRC it is all 2'ers up until about Jan 2017 (inadequate ground, so they eventually burn out the entire cluster; DIY info elsewhere on the site). Some complaints about the dual mass flywheels on manuals, but this seems to be a general issue, not BMW specific. The turbos are one piece with the wastegate, and those sometimes fail early (requires full turbo replacement - lots of zeros in that bill). I also think there is an idler pulley issue or s/t else with the motor (was a warrantied repair, so may have already been done), and some find the charge pipes fail, especially on modded cars. Generally not a lot of repetitive complaints noted, these are things I've heard about more than once, but not frequent enough that I'd really expect them on every car. I'd certainly get a PPI, since most things are going to be quite expensive to repair.

The only thing I've heard negative is the n20 timing chain issue on cars built before January 2015. You can Google it
