I suppose BMW thinks it's more fuel efficient in the long run to reduce all powertrain drag to coast longer at idle rather then engine brake and consume no fuel.

Doesn't the neutral coasting feature cause speed creep as you coast down a grade? That would be annoying if it does that.
It's easiest to visualize in the simplest case: The slope is gentle enough to just maintain the set speed with the engine disconnected. With the engine engaged the throttle has to be open enough to overcome internal engine friction at the much-higher-than-idle RPM as well as some extra friction in the tranmission.

It's true that on a steeper slope you need to pay attention to keep from overspeeding into ticket territory. If you're on cruise the electronics engages the engine to help control speed and will brake if necessary, but it will let your speed increase several clicks above the set speed. The steeper the slope the less fuel is saved (unless you let the speed rise, in which case the fuel savings comes after the slope ends as the car decelerates to the speed where the engine engages again).

However, I don't like it for the fuel savings, which are pretty minimal. It just makes me feel better about driving the car the best (for me) way possible.

On the highway, Sport makes no sense, in large part because it never gets to 8th gear the equivalent of overdrive.
On local roads, at lower speeds and in even moderate traffic, again Sport is not enjoyable.
In traffic, fuggeddabahtit. Eco+ makes sense then, and only then.
So that leaves local roads, especially twisties, with no on else around. Then it's Sport for me.
I live in fear of Sport+.

No 8th on a manual transmission so mine stays in sport.

I have a 2015 m235i with 8spd auto and I start the car in Comfort. I use comfort on the freeway cruising or as the car is warming up. I have sport(chassis only) which I used on the freeway and onramps. Sport drivetrain is kinda nuts and always gear hunting it feels like. There isn’t much difference between sport and sport+ when in auto mode so the chassis only sport provides a nice middle ground between comfort and sport+ Though there is S mode if you want it to hold gears a bit more. On a backroad I’ll use sport+ or DSC off with Manual mode engaged and use the paddles to shift.

Only time I use Eco Pro is in very very heavy stop and go traffic/ creeping traffic when you get a real benefit of the start/stop. I’ve seen fuel mileage shoot up from 15-16 to 18mpg so almost 15-20% improvement in heavy traffic situations. On the freeway there is almost 0 difference between sport+ manual mode and cruising in 8th and eco pro. It really only helps in heavy heavy traffic.

Autocrossing is DSC off mode w/manual shifting via paddles coming out of a 128i sport package it’s shocking what the electronics in the shocks and brakes can do with an open diff car. It’s also why my rear brakes are wearing faster than the fronts 😂🙈

I can imagine for the manual cars, (I was considering a 230i 6-spd), I’d leave it in sport or sport + all the time.

If you think the bmw modes are bad don’t drive a civic Type R🙈. Comfort mode has by far the best steering feel of any of the modes and there is no way to get the R+ throttle response with the better steering.

Sport mode always unless I have passengers and then I do Comfort because of the adaptive suspension. It's too much effort to go back and forth configuring sport mode with and without the stiff suspension.

My sport configuration is sport drivetrain and comfort chassis. Stays that way unless you reconfigure it in idrive or a ecu flash. 2018 m240.

We have steele plates on the road leading out of my neighborhood so I leave it in comfort till I'm past them with the thought that the suspension will be less hard. (It's already ruined 2 front tires.) Then right after, switch to sport as you have to stop at a stop sign, then pull right into a 50 MPH highway (SF Bay Bridge) that most folks are driving way over 50 - at least during low traffic periods. So I get to test the 0-60 times daily.

Folks are mentioning "manual mode" transmission, I assume I do that, although I see no switch for that ...

I know that. But I want to be able to toggle between sport drivetrain/comfort suspension and sport everything. The only way to do that is to re-configure sport configuration, can't be achieved with the rocker button. Since the "sport drivetrain" is kind of meaningless with a manual transmission, I just go between comfort and sport to mostly achieve what I want.

Sport configured with comfort steering as default startup. *I'm pretty sure, car is just days old, and the dealer tech guy said it's the most common setup for local street use.

Sport+ when alone on local twisties.

I very rarely use sport mode because I don’t drive like an ass. I get 30 to 35mpg in my m240i on average. With its tea kettle for a gas tank I couldn’t imagine driving around and getting 20mpg in such a small car.

My car is a automatic, I split the difference. I run in comfort but have the shift level set to M/S. Car is very responsive in the setting and also eliminated the CEL I was getting w/ my Dinan Elite .v1 when driven in comfort and "D".

Some of us prefer the firmer dampening of sport mode. The adaptive suspension is a little too "floaty" for my tastes in comfort mode. Also since I use the paddle shifters most the time, the extra exhaust sound is welcome to provide audible notice when its time to shift. Does that make me an ass?

Based on your split, I guess Professor Tea would consider you half-assed!

Thought I bought a sports car

I drive in Sport when in town, on windy back roads and coastal highways. My two E46's that I owned both had sports suspension so I really like trying to replicate that feeling.

I drive in Comfort on the freeway and have tried Eco, but with about a 2 miles per gallon savings decided it wasn't worth it. If you ever have driven Interstate 5 you know you sometimes have to accelerate quickly or be stuck behind a truck convoy.

I drive in Sport+ when I want to impress the 240i next to me. ;-)
