Installed MPE

Finally got around to installing the M Performance Exhaust (MPE) I had previously ordered for my new 2020 M240i when I learned MPE was not going to be a port-installed option.

The install was straightforward. AutoZone and O’Reilly both have free “lend” programs that include a tailpipe cutter. Picked up one of these pipe cutters yesterday and attempted to use it today. It made a nice mark in the exhaust pipe, but was starting to bend the pipe rather than cutting it. Pulled out my reciprocating saw and was able to make a clean cut in 30 seconds using the mark made by the pipe cutter. After cutting the pipe, everything else was simply bolt-on. Very easy and the whole job was about 40 minutes.

The MPE sounds great, lovely in fact. It’s not loud, but sounds notably more aggressive than the stock exhaust. Previously, I had installed the MP rear diffuser. The MPE tips look much better than the stock exhaust tips with this diffuser.

Based on my initial experience, I highly recommend this upgrade. More updates to come.

Ordered mine on Wednesday and just took the easy way out on the install by scheduling it to be done at my next service a week from Monday. Can't wait to liven up the sound of the car a little more!

I've now crossed over 1K and the MPE sounds particularly nice at WOT.

Yes, exactly. 1,000 miles for engine break-in.

Does the MPE change volume and tone as the engine breaks in? I have only a few hundred miles on my 2020 M240i convertible and it sounds pretty tame as compared to my old 2016 M235i MPE. Should I expect a change by 1k Miles?

Thank you, Mike

I've noticed no audible change from 2 miles to 2500 miles on my 19 M performance. To quiet for me.

I agree, after eliminating fake engine noise my car was whisper quiet unless all the windows down.

After adding the MPE, it sounds so amazing. Perfect sound to my ears.

I am really disappointed with the addition of only the MPE. It sounds more or less like the stock exhaust. Now that I have invested in this BMW product, I wonder if anything can be done to improve the volume and growl?

My 2016 M235i N55 engine sounded great with the MPE. I wonder why the B58 can't sound as nice?

Thank you for your input.

I started with the Catted downpipe and liked the sound until I disabled the fake engine noise. Too quiet so added the MPE. Lovely sound. Loud at cold start but no drone and really aggressive sound under WOT or aggressive throttle

I have MPE on my 18' M240 and I really enjoy the exhaust! Especially when I get on the throttle and the little burbles and crackles on overruns. However, I also drove a 440i with MPE for a few days and I found that the MPE on the 440i sounded better than on my M240...

How are the piped in speaker produced sounds eliminated? Can you direct me to the information?

Thank you,

Mike

They're the same engine; same exhaust. There's no way for them to sound different, other than the fact the tips on the 440i are 7 inches further away from the driver's earshot on the 440i.

I thought the MPE for the 3 and 4 series was cat back with a non resonated mid pipe. MPE for the 2 series was only axle back.
