Service Reminder Reset Question

I just hit my 36 months (first batch of M240s) so I went in for my third regular and last free service visit. Up til then after each visit the service reminder was reset by the dealer to 10,000 miles/12 months. This time they reset it for 7,000 miles.

Is this the usual practice or is this to get me in (and paying) sooner? I only put about 9,000 miles on it per year so it isn’t a big deal but it feels a little odd to change the recommended service interval only when they’re no longer on the hook. Others have this experience?

Are you going off the number that displays on the instrument cluster when you start the car? If so, and considering your mileage, I bet the brakes are due in 7,000 miles, which is sooner than the next scheduled oil change service (10,000) so the lesser of the two numbers displays.

You can use the iDrive to see the mileage/time remaining for all service reminders.

Topdown240,

I would bet ljason8eg is correct. My car has displayed 3,100 for the better part of the past 18 months. Looking in iDrive, it's for the rear brake pads (which are still fine, by the way). The only time I saw it (briefly) change is when the oil change dipped below 3,100 miles. Then it counted down for me until I got an oil change. After the oil was reset, it was right back to 3,100 miles (probably for the next 31,000 miles!)

3100 is some sort of magic number. Both of our BMWs have been showing that figure for quite a while, unchanged, for just about every service.
