Bridgestone RE71r 235/45 17 for Auto X

Installed Potenza RE71r in 235/45 R17 size.

So far no issue with fitment/rubbing. (17x7.5 ET40)

Sidewall doesn't seem like very stiff but need more time to really feel the difference. Will see how much it rolls.

Compound on this tire is very soft. You can feel it when you touch the thread.
As expected, it picks up everything on the road and throw back to fender liner. lol

It doesn't feel too noisy for now. Although it has some weird hum at higher speed.

Looking forward to next Auto X.

you just put yourself into the R-comp class with that tire.

I run these regularly on street/ road track.

Super sticky, very soft, wont last long, not loud at all when comparing to other r comps.

keep it around 34 hot, sidewalls are much stiffer than a mpss. Compare this tier with a nt01.

it's still 200 wear rated. lol

Technically, this tire should last 20k miles (with 200 wear rating) but I have no idea how this will last 20k miles.
There is no way this is 200 wear rate.

It's not. They just like to say it is If I remember right the RS3 was 200 treadwear also....the RE71 is way softer.

Some organizations bump you into another class or allocate more points to your car if you run RE71. Bimmer Challenge Time Attack did this to me when I ran RE71.

PPl show up on re71s and think they won't be put into the R comp tire, or add 5pts. Your wrong.

Some clubs may overlook it, most won't.

enjoy the tires!!! I thought they were too sticky for auto x on the awd with the understeer, wanted to slide a little more out back.

And watch those cones! I hit one at 90mpg 2 weeks ago, re routed my brake lines cost me $1000 to repair.

Does SCCA put Re71r in different class?
I couldn't find anything about Re71r in SCCA rule book.

I'm not sure about SCCA classing, but I'm running this tire and it is fantastic on track! Looking forward to seeing your impressions and pics/vids.

SCCA tire rule for Street and Street Touring classes is a minimum tread wear rating of 200. Ergo: RE71r is legal in both. ST has some restrictions on the maximum width for each subclass.

Bridgestone re71s are 100% legal and are one of the most the most preferred tire in all of the scca 200 treadwear minimum classes. I run 235 40 r18s.

I did a Auto X this weekend and it was a blast.
Tire held up very well at respectably low pressure (compare to MPSS).

I ran 36~37 in front and 30~32 rear, hot.
Tire wear did not even touch the wear marker triangle. I was impressed.
(I had to run 43~48 psi in front with MPSS to keep the letter readable on the sidewall. lol)

I did not improve that much in terms of my time/score compare to other regular drivers but I think I was little too scared to push way further than I used to with MPSS.
After I checked my videos, I don't hear much tire squeal. I should've pushed more. way more.

Next time, I will lower the pressure to 32~34 in front and 28~30 in rear and push much harder. will see.

Overall, I can see why this is THE tire for Auto X.

I’m considering switching to re71r as my full time tire, but primarily for autocross. I wish I could have a dedicated set but I just don’t have the storage space.

I’m a little concerned about running the re71r full time since it’s not XL load rated and the car (228i convertible) wants XL tires. Does this matter?

Read this and see if you might be able to use the RE71R anyway:

https://blog.tirerack.com/blog/bens-...s-xl-stand-for

Woops...hold on! The Rack shows this XL RE71R as a tire that fits your car:

https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...Clar=M%20Sport

I suggest calling them and asking them if they'll work for your car and your intended purpose.

Thanks @dradernh! Not sure how I missed that!

I'm actually considering switching to RE71Rs up front and keeping the MPSS in the rear. I'm thinking that will give me a more neutral handling balance and I'll replace RE71Rs as they wear out from autocross and the MPSS in the rear should last substantially longer (saving $). Has anyone else done this? Should I be concerned that tire shops won't mount different tires front/rear?

not advised by anyone to mix tires like that, anyone will mount anything if you just bring them a wheel and tire.

actually, going from staggered to square setup, my car feels very close to neutral. Maybe slightly understeer.
Stock staggered MPSS setup is definitely understeer. It was pretty bad.

I think it will feel very neutral in 228i with square setup since it's a lot lighter in front.

I did another auto x with Windycity Miata club last weekend.
I was shocked how many runs they do. 17 runs!

Anyhow, tire felt great with ton grip, but they do overheat very easily. (well with 17 runs..lol)
When it overheats, it does get greasy and I did not have any water to spray.
Still, my time was very consistent for last 10 runs in dry. First 7 runs were in rain.

In terms of pressure, I was running 32 in front and 30 rear. Tire temperature was about 165F. I felt tire lose grip a little when temperature was over 150F.

Next time, I will try to spray water as it heats up.

Wow! I might have stuck with autocross if that many runs had been available.

As it was, I realized that unless I went every weekend or two it was going to take me a long time to get any good it.

Sang -- this is Clark (red M3). I'd recommend running lower pressures than what you are using but that's your call. I run 33F/29R but admittedly am running either 275 square or 285 square as I have 18x9F/18x10R. A Bridgestone rep asked me my pressures at the Peru Nat'l tour and confirmed they designed this tire to be run at fairly low pressures with the stiff sidewall. In terms of picking up time, autocross is an exercise of transcending your perceived limitations of what you/your car can do. It's a learned skill which takes some time to develop. Driving/riding with faster drivers will only make you faster. If you want to do a grudge match on Saturday (ie 3 extra runs in my car), I'd be up for it but will disclose my tires are a bit worn but should be still fast.

Don't take this wrong but picking hard tires for rough surfaces is not conducive to being fast. As choppy as Rantoul's concrete surface appears in that video, it is actually much smoother that it appears and very grippy. Fair more grippy than virtually any smooth asphalt surface, and only slightly less grippy than the best sites in the US. Many national competitors come to our local events to get seat time on this site before trekking to Lincoln for Nat's because of that reason. We are a welcoming club with a relaxed atmosphere. If you are in the area, check out an event.
