Good & Bad News about Next Generation 2 Series

Good News: Next Generation 2 Series coupe will remain RWD, adapting to the new CLAR platform on the next gen G20 3 series and G29 Z4. The 2 Series Gran Coupe (4 Door) will be FWD based on the UKL platform shared with the X1/2.

Bad News: The 2 Series Convertible won't be returning. The Z4 will be replacing its spot, and the 4 Series Convertible (which is rumored to be returning to a soft top) will be the other choice in convertibles, although it will be larger than the 2 series.

Well, I'm glad I got my 2 series convertible...I drove the 4 series convertible. And while it was more handsome and spacious, it was not nearly as fun to drive. Will that change if it becomes a soft top? Hard to imagine that would transform the car into something tossable like the 2.

Not unexpected - especially in the current climate. I've long argued that BMW needs to do some product rationalization.

It will make a noticeable difference. Hard top convertibles are heavy!

And the trunk space sucks. Plus more expensive moving parts to break.

Perhaps so. My E46 M3C was just as tossable as the 2, and it was a soft top. I wish the M2 were available as a convertible...

While just a rumor, this was predictable and I suspect is true. I'd guess in the US, 2 Series coupes outsell verts by a 3:1 margin and the 2 Series is really a low sales volume vehicle anyway. I really don't need a back seat, so provided there is a reasonable amount of trunk space, similar to the 2er vert, I am interested in the Z4 and looking forward to seeing the full production Z4 M40i to be revealed in August. I am also interested in the future M440i / M4 drop top, provided it's a soft top as rumored. I'd expect spy shots and advance info on the 4 Series to start appearing in the next year or so. I love my M235i convertible. It has made me a big BMW fan. Fortunately I only have 24K miles on it now with plans to keep it til 100K, so barring anything unforeseen, I won't be in the market for a replacement convertible til 2022-23.

I am actually quite glad the Z4 will be returning, and from the sounds of it, this time it will be back to proper sports car form.

If BMW does what they did with the last Z series and make the seat so small that a regular human cannot fit into it. Then they will loose a lot of customers. I am 6 foot tall and I never was able to fit in the Z series. I am happy I bought my M235 vert. Looks like its going to be in the family a very long time. Too bad no vert M2. I would have bought that in a heartbeat.

I would hope that switching to the CLAR platform won't send the 2er the same direction the 3/4 went and become a bloated oversized beast. The whole reason I went with the 2 instead of a 4 is that it's exactly the same size as my E46 330Ci

The reviews on the prototype 2019 Z4 M40i have all been really good. Pumping up the B58 to 382 hp on a car 120lbs lighter. I’m excited about it. The full M version will be a real beast.

Oh God, please don't let this be true. I love my M235 'vert who's lease is up. Was really looking forward to my next 2er 'vert in Sunset Orange. Might have to jump to the Porsche Boxster. Damnit all to hell!

If you want another 2 Series convertible when your lease is up, you should be in fine shape. I doubt BMW will drop the 2 Series vert until they introduce the "G" generation of the 2 Series which won't be til 2021 or 2022 MY. That said, the Boxster isn't a horrible alternative.

No worries. This won’t affect your planned 2019 model purchase. This news is for next gen/platform.

I'm interested to see when, not if, this happens - hopefully not for a long time, so those of us who favor them can continue to enjoy them.

I've just spent a few months looking for a RWD coupe with a 6-speed and sunroof delete. That gave me a chance to realize how few 2 Series came to the US with MTs in them. That wasn't a total surprise, but the fair number of convertibles was, and so was the very high percentage of xDrives.

Yep, I bought my 235 used from the dealer. There were hardly any in CA at the time. If I find out the next gen won't have MT I will trade this in for a 2019 with manual.

Don’t know about the Z4 that was just dropped but the 2004 I owned was no problem in fitting and I’m 6’2” and my son drove it a lot and he is 6’4”. The hard top must have cut the space from the old soft top. The sticker on my 2004 Z4 was over $47K so the new one srptarting at $50K doesn’t sound too bad but it depends on the specs. I wouldn’t get one since no stick is available on it.
