228i dual exhaust options
Hello everyone. Looking for some advice. I would like to do a dual exhaust setup on my 228i. Through local performance shop has a 335i stock exhaust for 400.00 and they are able to weld it on. Not sure of the sound will any better than the stock 228i exhaust. Should I hold out for an M235i performance exhaust?

I'd recommend. . .

If you are considering an upgrade, I would recommend removing your stock downpipes and replace it with an after market downpipe without restrictive cats first to improve power. You will notice a nice growl from the stock exhaust as it tries to grapple with the extra amount of air it has to handle. If your less aggressive an axle back would be okay. You get the growl with a marginal performance gain. I am currently interested in the Dinan axle back exhaust because I live in the United Socialist Republic of California and they have eco nazis working at the DMV and where you get exhaust gases measured for having downpipes!

I am also in CA and have the Dinan catback pipes. Small HP bump, great sound compared with stock, well worth it. FWIW, I wouldn't dream of getting a cosmetic twin exhaust setup. For a start, would there even be a compatible diffuser?

It's a slightly challenging process. I could either have the stock diffuser cut to accommodate the other exhaust tip. I could aslo find a stock or a carbon fiber M235i rear diffuser. I saw a post not long ago online of someone using an M235i M performance exhaust on a 228i. It sounded great in a parking garage. I have an msport x drive 228i. My options are limited. It's costly just for the second exhaust tip.

I was spoiled by the fact the previous owner of my 228i installed M performance exhaust, so I can’t speak to the process of installation or weighing against a different option, however, the thing sounds wonderful.
I am looking into deactivating the active sound feature now because it’s really not necessary and is also just a ridiculous feature to begin with, IMO. — I agree with others here that it definitely doesn’t make much difference in performance to go dual, just visual and audio cosmetic appeal, mostly.. — that said, I wouldn’t want any other setup on this car. |
