Racechip & Dinan stage1 Dynojet

Here's my Racechip Dyno I did past weekend, Racechip has been installed since beginning of December 2014.

Reasons I went with Racechip? I have no experience working with cars under the hood or modding or tuning, wanted something that would increase performance and improve MPG at the same time. RaceChip® – plug-in up to 31% more POWER and 15% ECONOMY. 18 years of experience. Made in Germany. Rated Best 2013 ChipTuning Box & won the review of EuroTuner Magazine http://www.racechip-usa.com/media/racechip_review.pdf

How RaceChip chip tuning works
It read data from the engine control unit in real time, and optimise many characteristics. These data include items such as injection timing, injection quantity, injection pressure, boost pressure and air mass. In addition to an increased engine power of up to 31 % you can also save fuel at the same time. But that does only work if you – encouraged by the driving pleasure – do not step on the gas or accelerate more than you did before without your RaceChip®.

Fully stock X3 w/ half tank of Valero 93 octane, xDrive
Stock setting for Racechip N20 is C

1st run is baseline
2nd run on C
3rd run on F
4th run on 1
5th run on 4

The Racechip settings are from Lowest 8 to highest 7
8, 9, A, B, C, D, E, F, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

I feel Racechip on F could of given a better number but it's whatever to me, at least Dyno also proves its some more than a stage1.
Waiting on the Corrected and Smoothing 5 graphs from the Dyno shop

Also attached my friends 2013 xDrive28i w/ Dinan stage1 and Supersprint quadexhaust Dyno

I attached the 5 runs on my X3, attached the BMS stage1 vs Brand X tune they were comparing, and also my friends graph.

To sum this up.. Racechip in stock setting gets about +5hp more & +15tq than Bms stage1. I can increase the setting to more than what stage1 tunes offer if I want to. Another advantage I see with the Racechip is the MPG improvement in the highway very very noticeable. I wouldn't mind trying out BMS Stage1 or aFe Scorcher but no money for that and Dyno's cost $125/hr here. I'm done with this topic. We are the few Racechip owners on N20 Kendroz Yellowflash but the list is growing.

Go check out the M235 thread 5+ owners, F15 35/35i/50i 10+ owners.
F10 535/550 owners 5+

BMS also said "a subjective note I found the Stage1 tune to be much smoother under low and partial throttle operation. BRAND X has clearly been set to give a bit of a "wow" factor when tapping the gas pedal. You get much of the boost gain at a very low pedal input. I didn't care for it at all."

At the end of the day Racechip, aFe scorcher, AcitveAutowerke Active8, BMS Stage1 are all good. But as my friend says always do your research because even the most popular tune is not trouble free.
How much better is the MPG really over BMS? With my JB4 I just got 37 mpg on a 336 mile trip that was not flat, whereas I've done the same trip before in very similar conditions stock and only got 34. If race chip only gives you 1 mpg over jb4 I don't know if that trade off is worth it considering the logging capabilities I love about the JB4.

But nevertheless great write up!

Just to clarify, so the BMS dyno is from a different car on a different dyno?

Yeah.. by comparing different products across different dyno's, this is a worthless comparison.

Same engine and the BMS Dyno is RWD where it has less drivetrain loss than xDrive

So basically different dyno, different car, different conditions... not sure how the comparison applies
Im glad that you are very satisfied with the Race ultimate and thank you for the review. But i cannot agree with your comparison.
I dynoed my car in Las Vegas and California. same car, same mods. I got 15 whp difference. ( both Dynos are Dynojet)

if you're not having any problems with your JB4 no need to change but there's been a few cases of battery drain, drivetrain malfuction, battery cables melted and other issues I've read w/ bms/jb4 where they have sold the unit and went with another one with better quality cables. But for some of us that do not want to pay someone to install JB4 (lack of experience) the others seem like a easier install except Racechip gives you some more performance than the other stage 1 tunes.
Not everyone has their own garage to plug in their laptop to do datalogging to their car and stuff. I instead use a OBD2 Scantool unit that works via Bluetooth paired up to my Android (Torque Pro or Dash Command) works great for lots of data logging usability as I been doing. Sure I prob can't program my tune to different boost per gear but I wouldn't want to touch that among other things and too much troubleshooting, for that I'll just pay a safer Software/ECU Flash that will out perform all piggyback.
Again, this is not to say 1 is better than the other as each individual will choose whats best for their situation or needs. It was just to provide info on the Dyno and show how Racechip stacks up against Stage1.
No no I wasn't trying to say you were wrong or one was better. I'm a firm believer that everyone has to do what's best for them. I was just curious about highway mpg and wanted to provide some background as to why. Still interesting write up nevertheless!

If anyone considering Dinan on their N20 and wants to see the comparo to RaceChip here's a little testing me and my friend did back in March on a X3 which has more drivetrain loss than 228.
