I just picked up a 2016 M235i. The dealer has 18's, 7.5" all the way around with Pirelli Cinturato P7's. I thought if the car was an XI then I would automatically get the square set up instead a 225/40 - 245/40 set up. Did I get hosed or did the prior owner order it this way? Sorta pissed as the car just doesn't look right with the smaller size tires. There aren't even flush with the fender.
I definitely need 19's with beefier tires for sure. With my wimpy set can I just add spacers? If so what size spacers should I go for if I keep the stock 18 set up? Also are spacers just for "look" or do they actually enhance the handling a bit? At least I have Mich PS4's coming Monday as the P7's can't do the job with hard cornering. Back end feels very loose and squishy. Just a crappy tire! |

Wheels
▪ Front: 7.5Jx18 - 225/40 R18 92Y ▪ Rear: 8.0Jx18 - 245/35 R18 92Y Tyres: ▪ Bridgestone Potenza S001 Runflats [Edit] Sorry - I got a bit confused re the Pirelli discussion: First, worth saying that Cinturato is a generic product name for a variety of tires, including both PZero (performance-oriented) tire and the P7 (comfort/mileage-oriented) tyre. I'm surprised that BMW USA is putting P7s onto M-Lites as original equipment. In Europe, it's the PZero that BMW uses for OE and retro-fit wheel+tire sets, which makes more sense. Go on the UK Pirelli site and it only recommends the PZero for my 2016 M235i - not the P7. So without knowing all the details, I'm not surprised if a stressed-out P7 (i.e. more a sedan comfort-type, longer-life tire) is prone to failure when you add 320+ BHP, runflat-ness and potholes to the equation. If your Cinturato is the PZero, then it's oriented to heavier cars (think Aston Martin, Porsche, Jaguar etc.) and I'd say not so suited to lighter models like the 2 Series. The main criticism I've heard is that on a lighter car, under cornering stresses, it'll hang on really well and then suddenly 'snap' into oversteer, rather than give progressively. All this shouldn't put you off considering the Pirelli Winter Sottozero range for your winter option, however. The Serie-II and S3 are worth a look at as winters. The Serie-II being more oriented to retaining good handling in warmer/dryer conditions and the S3 being more oriented to snow handling and resistance to aquaplaning.

This sucks I have (4) 225 P7s. I assumed the previous owner stretched a 225 to the wider rear wheel but after reading this thread I'm realizing I'm going to have to buy new wheels.
I had 10" 275 PSS rubber in the back on my previous Infiniti G37S sedan which was bigger/heavier with about the same HP but less torque, however it came with 8.5" 255 stock. Driving around on the P7s in the m235i doesn't feel safe, losing traction quite often, especially when wet. I never had these problems in my G. What are the widest wheels/tires people have fit on non-xdrive cars? The rough ride of these RFTs makes me thinkg 19s would be a bad idea but maybe a 19" normal summer tire would still be more comfortable than 18" RFTs and quieter. |

My feeling is that you'd have to pay someone to take even brand new P7s.
I think I'll stick with 18s for road feel/performance and go 235F/255R with PS4S and I don't want to use spacers. Are there any forged wheels that are generally considered a good bargain? Now I'm just hoping something nice pops up in the classifieds near Seattle. Last edited by grocerylist; 07-14-2019 at 02:10 PM.. |
