Diagnostic Tool "Carly"

Hey buddies,
I am just wondering if someone has used the carly diagnosis app on his f23? On VW I was a huge fan of it, but it seems to me that it is very unstable with the F models of BMW. I have used it on my m235i and experienced some uncertainties respectively faulty behavior. Don't know if this is because it's a us import.

Would be great to hear about your experience!

I prefer BimmerCode for coding and BimmerLink for diagnostics, they are specifically designed for BMW and Mini. Also 1 time fee and you are set to go.

I had Carly for a year and got rid of it when the subscription was up. I didn't like it.

replaced it with bimmercode and a foxwell scanner with BMW software.

Gonna steal the thread for a minute.

Are you happy with the Foxwell Scanner? I am looking to get it for my classic cars that have 20-pin diagnostic port like the E30's or the 850 etc. Does it support these cars, do you have any idea?

I do like it. I have the ECS branded (schwaben) one btw. I am used to the old Peake tools and wanted something dedicated like that. but with today's electronics it's a lot more complicated and reading all the ecu's takes time compared to the old E chassis stuff!

the one irk I have is that auto reading the VIN fails at first. do it again immediately and it pops up quick and you can begin scanning all or just specific ecu's, your choice. it has worked well for the F22 and F30. it also worked as a regular odb2 scanner for my Toyota sienna. I might eventually purchase the Toyota software from foxwell.

I bought the converter to plug it into old 20 pin round connectors but have never been able to get it to read anything in my E30 or E36. I've tried automatic and manual selection of the dme, air bag modules, etc, and it has never worked. Ive just fell back to the quick Peake tools so far.

Carly I didn't like because a lot of the codes or messages came back and were difficult to read or understand. sometimes they were just in German. and it connects over BT which proved troublesome at times. (oddly never had an issue with the BT adapter I got for bimmercode). I also hated how the app defaulted to landscape. I liked the PDF reports though.

I probably could have learned to like it in the long term but it was the subscription service that ultimately killed it for me. after a few years of that I could own something else. folks who got it for life before sub service got it good.

I'd still recommend the Peake R5 (I think I got the model right) for your e30 and e31 (just got to read both dme's of the v12 separately if I remember correctly). when I had a small evap leak in my E36, I would sometimes reset the CEL while at a stoplight. it's that quick and easy.

I am an early adopter of Carly, and I have a "permanent" license for the "pro" version. I use it regularly on my F80 M3 and F23 228i with zero issues. I use the BT adapter with an Android tablet. I've done coding, diagnostics and fault-clearing, and used-car investigation. If I had to pay a yearly "subscription", I'd probably not like it as much, though.

My experience has been similar; I also have the permanent license as well. It has worked fine on both my F22 and R55. That said, I also have a Foxwell scanner loaded with BMW software that I also use- and it can also be used to run diagnostics on my E36/5.

So you are saying it works with your E36/5? I was think of getting it but after celsdogg comment I was looking for something else. Does it show realtime data on the E36/5?

It's a 318ti- the Z3 is an E36/7. I've used the Foxwell with the adapter on the ti with no issues. I haven't used it to read realtime data, however.
