I have not experienced this in decades. Not with Mazda, not with Audi, not with BMW. The weight/headroom issue: fair enough. The quality of a modern moonroof should not cause those other issues.

Update

Update on the moon roof delete (i.e. not deleted) issue.

Upon discovering the issue, I immediately contacted the head of BMW NA along with the dealer sales manager (he was also the one I dealt with on the deal). They were both great to deal with.

I think they would have been willing to reorder the car, but I would have had to return this car immediately and no loaner could/would be provided. This is my daily driver and my M235i was already sold.

They provided a limited slip differential (LSD), including the installation, as an accommodation. I just picked up the car earlier today.

The LSD was something I was planning to install anyway and had already purchased one. I will now sell that as it is not needed.

Nice, that's a hell of a deal to compensate.

Good for you, seems like an excellent win-win all things considered. Worthwhile reminding other folks that in situations such as this it's often a lot less expensive for BMW to give you parts and labor versus cash compensation. They're out the wholesale value of the part and whatever they pay a tech hourly to install, pennies on the dollar compared to a straight cash to you. Much easier battle to fight and win.

This is a concern for me, mainly for track days though as I am tall. I'll need to test out the car with a sunroof and a helmet.

Yeah, and have also had about that many cars with a sunroof and no issues, a 2015 x1 being the most recent one. About 40% of my cars with sunroofs had issues. I've seen enough sunroof issues on friends cars as well to affirm the opinion that they are not a beacon of reliability. I guess you've had a streak of good luck with them.

If you really like sunroofs, than no reason not to get one, however if I have the option, I prefer cars without them.
