If you get an M-Perf Exhaust w/o diffuser, to exhaust tips stick out more?
Saw some pictures on 3 series cars with M-performance exhaust and stock diffuser where the tips stuck out more than normal. Is the M-performance diffuser needed to fix this?

No. You just need to install it correctly.... you need to cut the stock pipe and measure so it aligns properly

There are two part numbers for the M Performance exhaust. One with the M Performance rear diffuser and one with out. If you order the right one, the exhaust tips will be in the normal positions and length.

when i got my performance exhaust installed, the tips were definitely sticking out further than i liked. the dealership said it was installed correctly and that they would have to cut the pipe again to move the tips further in. i ended up adding the rear diffuser which completely solved the problem. i do recommend the performance diffuser either way, i feel it really completes the rear end.

Thanks in advance for the photo shoot!
I also have a MPE exhaust without MP Diffuser and to my mind exhaust tips are sticking further out. Reference of my MPE (without MP Diffuser) is 18 30 2 293 766 Reference of MPE for MP Diffuser is 18 30 2 286 673 |

Thanks for the feedback. For that reason I'm going to pass on the exhaust.

You need to cut the stock main pipe..... depending where you do it it will determine how much the whole exhaust will stick out, although you have some adjustment at where the MPE clamps to the stock main pipe

Yep that photo with the tape is my stock exhaust before I took a sawzall to it. I just measured the length of the pipe sticking out of the M Performance one and gave myself a few mm of leeway and cut along the tape edge.

I have a lift at home, but the only tools I used were the right size socket wrench for the clamp and hangers, a sawzall, and a rubber mallet to remove the stock tips from the stock exhaust. There really isn't much to the install other than cutting it in the right spot and there is plenty of access under there. You could do it on ramps or jack stands easily.

When ordering the M Performance Exhaust, BMW makes a point to inquire and clarify with the buyer WITH or WITHOUT the M Performace Diffuser? Why do they ask this? I assume there's a reason.
Am I wrong in assuming the reason they ask this is because they have taken the exhaust pipe length difference into consideration and perhaps have addressed this issue in design?

You dont need to buy anything other than the exhaust if thats all you want. I paid $650 for the non M Performance diffuser and it came with the exhaust clamp needed. You can clearly see I reused the stock tips even.

The cost wasnt the important part there, but that there are 2 different exhausts and that the non diffuser one can be used later on with the diffuser if you get the adapters.
