Just my opinion, but I would go with "a". The second one looks photoshopped, if you will; rather busy.

are both pieces the same smoothness ? I'd probably choose A also for furniture quality.

But B would make a really good looking box or something.

Are both pieces cut to size and sanded or are you going to add finish ?

Most ply has an A and B side.
The A is best and is usually on the seen side.

It's already cut for the table and each side has a single coat of varnish at this point. These are BBQ tables that used to have particle board as a top

Here's the one I finished last week

I see. Well, personally, I would go with "C" if it was varnished/stained something a bit darker. Looks too plain the wait is now imo. Needs some spice if you will.

Personally, I'd lay out today's newspaper on either side, and hit it with several coats of "clear" polyurethane. Every single time that I have ever tried to finish wood, it always ends up with newspaper embedded in the finish. I said that if I were ever doing wood finishing again that I would intentionally seal the newspaper onto the finished surface to save myself some time.....

Both are ugly IMHO.

Burn the A side prior to finishing. Liven it up some.

C the knots just look to machine and not organic.

A/C, alone, doesn't mean it is suitable for outdoor use. That is just the surface ply "quality" designation, i.e. one side is A grade, while the other is C grade...like what you show in your photos where one side has all of the knots(C) and the other doesn't(A).

For it to be suitable for outdoor use, there need to be additional designations, which vary by manufacturer and will say things like "exterior", "exposure x", "x"...you pretty much have to look up the manufacturer's spec sheet to determine what it is. To take that further, most plywoods that have an exposure rating can only withstand that exposure a limited amount of time before they begin to fail and delaminate.

I vote side A. They make a marine polyurethane that is VERY durable, but if it isn't true exterior grade it will only be a matter of time. I'd use it on the finished one, either way, since you already have the time into it. But wouldn't sink more time into cutting/sanding more if it isn't exterior grade (looks like it would make nice shelving or other inside uses).

Outside folding table when I take it out of storage. For the day at most. Won't be leaving it out in the elements

I'd say "A" as well....
who knows if the knots on 'c' will eventually start to become uneven or crack.

They have cracks in them now, but I dribbled the varnish in there and filled them up. Will take some future extra sanding to make those spots level with the rest.

I would knot go with the nots. The smooth side looks better and if you want character you can do that with a finish or an insert if you want to put a tad more work in.
