I've read every thread here and other sites. I want to go 245/35, and will not be lowering car.

Should I find an 8" wheel ? I know folks go 8.5, but so many places show 8 with standard 45 offset ideal. Zero rubbing, issues with strut etc. (and can go Dinan)

Also chatted with a few folks and they drive PS4 year round, says take easy under 40 degrees until they warm...one guy runs at track at 40 degrees out, so does a lap or 2 to warm. (some folks say dont even start the car under 40 !! )

3 different shops says Flow Formed (Apex etc) just fine for light track duty...crazy many track folks scream "forged" !! or don't bother.

Thx for thoughts
I have Dinan and LCA running 245 35 18 on 18*8et40 and I rub on compression.

Looking into 18*8 et45 but options seem limited.

Would adding LCA but not Dinan help ? Or front with LCA will rub regardless ?

Wheels are wear items; how many people do you know that replace their TE37s every year?

Apex and other brands like that are just fine. Always inspect your wheels before and after track events. Heat cycles from high brake/hub temps and hitting curbing kills wheels, as well as the stress from running R compounds or even 200tw tires.

Not sure. Didn't try LCA only. I have the LCA+TS combo because I read that would help but it didn't do much in my experience.

^ This – for sure.

Do that and you may find that even wheels at Apex's price point are like the Energizer Bunny™. I ran D-Force wheels (roughly, an Apex-equivalent) on an E36 race car for years, jumping every curb that needed jumping (example below), and not one ever showed signs of failing. Other drivers changed their D-Forces out annually, just on general principle. Like so much in this hobby, YMMV.

Watkins Glen's Bus Stop is the Northeast's go-to section for curb jumping, as seen at the beginning of this short clip: https://youtu.be/WmoR63l1Sig. As is often the case with video in an example like this one, the image hardly does justice to the violence of the line taken by the driver.

yea like the ARC SM-10 in Black, but 8.5 and ET35 might be too much poke.

Keep digging for 18x8 Flow Form that works.

Whats really odd is my RFT in 225 have a 6" tread width and PS4 in same size is 7.7 - in 235/45 its only 8.2 (more still for 245/35 obviously)

I'm in a similar conundrum with a smaller budget. Interested in others' replies. In my case, though, I'm keeping my stocks for winter and the new ones are strictly summer only, so strength and finish durability aren't as much of a concern for me. Makes life a little easier.
I have both 18x8 and a 17x8 square set ups on my M240i. Both sets are using 245s all around.

I saw your thread on that last year, I know its a bit more tread with 35, but would I not have less issues with 235/40 ? Barely taller than stock, not lowering (for now) and could probably take the 1" drop (Dinan) with 45 offset.

I guess you go 245, and play with offset/spacers/rolling, or 235, and get less tread, but less issues with "tightness"

Def. want 8" and leaning the OZ Leggera and MP4s for 9 months...keep my stock/RFT for Winters.

I'll be doing light track and weekend play, not many 8" options I like.

EDIT: Oz Leggera not really flow form, more cast. Bad reviews with bends...ugghgh Need a decent 18x8 black wheel !!

Folks have suggestions for 18x8 flow form wheels ? Think I've caught more...thx

My 18X8 are OZ Legerras. I love them, but bent one of the wheels without even knowing it. Probably had <200 miles on the wheels when I noticed. Tirerack did give me a discount, but it was still expensive to replace even with that discount. Here are what the 18x8 OZ look like on my M240i.

No issues with my 17x8s after thousands of miles, but these are forged and a smaller diameter.

The two wheels i that i could find in black on Tirerack and would suggest are:

BBS CH-R 18x8 ET40 = $563/wheel

or

Enkei Rajin 18x8 ET42 = $212/wheel

235/40 is the safer bet, while 245/35 is is probably safer with the ET42 vs ET40 imo.

I would go BBS, as it seems only a few flow form have the strength, Apex seems decent, but only 8.5"

So few choices at 18x8 - thx Merlin, seems the Oz doesnt use a full flow form process, seems to be some issues with strength - street probably just fine like yours, but light track wouldn't be good IMO.

BBS (Flow Form) - I'd just step up and get custom BC Forged for $3,100 at that point !

I want the Titan-7 T-S5, but not available for FXX. Great forged wheel for $500. (most BMW configs)

Decided on APEX EC-7R in Anthracite 18x8.5 ET 45, 5" spacer (dont have straight 38 in one I want, 35 too much for me) with 235/40 PS4S, forged group sale at $475/each to good to pass up. Gives me a bit more flex with mods/springs down the road. Well over 8" thread, so almost 25% more than I have now !!

Thx for thoughts all !

Nice choice OP! I also joined the group buy with the same size EC-7R, does anyone know how effective the rim protection of 235/40 MPS4s is on 8.5" wheels? I ran a 245/40 with a 9" wheel on my last ride, this was slightly more stretched and did not leave much room for error...

I have peppered Tom (APEX) with questions, thx for patience ! He may be able to help.

Also the ET45 need 5mm spacer, and been chatting if I ever upgrade coilovers (may as I track more) needs the full 10mm addl. So why not get ET35 now...worried about negative camber now, and poke...that may be too close to fender (past) for me

What color car and wheels did you go with ? I'm joining group after this weekend track event

I'm ordering Brushed Clear to go on Melbourne Red, I think a bright wheel compliments red paint and the Brushed finish adds a unique touch to this look IMO.

This will only be run on the street so I'm not considering the need for additional camber and lower offset. I included spacers too and submitted some questions to APEX on the finer details, thanks for the tips.

awesome and that will look great. Sounds like most issues with spacers (vibrations etc) are from wrong kind and no extended bolts. May just do camber plates now and skip spacers with ET45

I was street only and now I'm hitting track Saturday. lol (I blame here btw !!)

I ran 235/40/18 with an 18x8 wheel (BBS SR). I think the offset was 44 but also had 10mm spacers and they were FLUSH (so et34). There was no poke. Tires were MPSS.

Happy to help clarify some details! In terms of the rim protection question, a 235 isn't going to offer too much protection from curbing on a 8.5" wheel. A 245 or 255 would be a better option if protection is what you are looking for, but the move to a wider tire may affect your camber needs/spacers et c.

I also wanted to mention that not all coilovers will require wider spacers with this setup. Certain designs/brands (especially those that use conical springs up front) require these spacers but other coilovers with liner springs and lower profile spring perches can clear without issues.

Big thanks to the guys participating in the forged group buy! Let me know if you need anything as we go through the process!

-Tom

I ran the 17" BBS SRs on my M235i for years. Offset was 35 , I think.

18x8.5 45, 5mm spacer in front, 245/35 square. Works great, zero rubbing.

I run square in the winter:

BBS SR 17x7.5+35 with 225/45/17. The fit is awesome for winter tires. Photo attached, on 100% stock suspension.

I am moving to a square setup in the next week for summer:

235/40r18 (Plan is to wear through that set and then move to 245/35 once I am sure it will fit right)

APEX EC-7 18x8.5 ET45 (and I got a 5mm spacer for the front). I also now have about -2 degrees of camber in the front thanks to camber bushings.

I will post photos of that setup as soon as I get the tires on (pandemic made things a bit complicated!)
