1200 mile service

I hope the administrators do not move this post.

BMWNA is paying for a break in service at 1200 miles.

Since our cars are so new, most dealers do not know that it exists. Mine was the first 1200 mile service done at BMW Seattle. The service advisors disagreed with each other on whether it was cover. BMWNA settled the discussion and said yes it is part of the regular maintenance plan.

Why the discussion exists is that BMWNA has not put the service into the program that reads our keys yet.

You may also note that oil changes are now at one year or 10,000 miles, which ever comes first. Not the 15,000 miles that our previous BMWs were.

is there some letter or bulletin from BMW NA that states this? I was told by my service rep that since my car doesn't have an "S" motor, there is no 1200 service.

Interesting. My car is at the body shop right now, but I attend to do this when I get it back. I'll let people know how I make out here.

Thats strange... want to know whats the service interval here in México???

EVERY 24 MONTHS OR 18,756 MILES

Of course theres no 1,200 mile service...

Why? Maybe because in México service is "free" till 37,500 miles mark or 3 years of ownership whichever happens first... So the scumbags at BMW want to pay the minimum possible of course.

So BMW apparently does not set the service interval based on technical specs of the engine Im afraid...

Proof of my car:

Service is free for US for four years or 50,000 miles.

Does anyone think that paying for 5K mile oil changes out of pocket is overkill given the new 10k interval covered by the maintenance plan?

I used to do a 7.5K oil change on my e90 335 in between the free 15k miles free oil changes

With synthetic oil, I think once a year or every 10,000 miles is reasonable. I am not planning on doing a 5k oil change.

How did BMWNA settle that? In writing? Did they phone the dealer? I'm curious. What can I show my dealer to get them to do the service? If I called BMWNA would they tell me it's covered? Others have tried and BMWNA told them it wasn't.

I think this depends on what your long term goals with the car is.

If you want to keep it for a while 5 k oil changes

If it is a lease or no long term plans. Save the money and screw the guy getting your car used.

I have been a BMW mechanic for 10 years. AS a general rule. Cars that got less frequent oil changes have more problems then ones that got frequent oil changes. When CBS came out with 15000 mile oil changes I about fell over. Does anyone what to venture a guess as to why bmw reduced the mileage back to 10k. It was because they cost benefit said that it was cheaper to pay for more oil changes than warranty fixes. When free maintenance first came out bmw all of a sudden said services every 15k up from 7500. Nothing in the engines or chassis dramatically changed just it was now on bmw's dime.

IMHO I think that listening to BMW tell you your car has "lifetime" fluids, does not need fuel filters and so on is ridiculous. They removed the drain plugs on somethings so you cant change the fluid.

Bottom line. I will be changing my oil every 5 k at the between services. And will not subscribe to the "lifetime" jargon.

I agree that there is no such thing as a "Lifetime" fluid.

I asked the dealer and they insist that a 1200 mile oil change is NOT necessary. They basically told me to wait until the car's computer asks for it, which is at the 10.000 mile interval.
Should I even try to convince them?? I went with a lease instead of purchase.
I've been thinking of paying myself for it, for the peace of mind

I don't know what to tell you. Both dealers in our area say it exists and covered by BMWNA.

If you REALLY want it, I would say his dealership in Seattle got it covered by BMWNA, so they can, too. If need be, they can call that dealer and find out how. It's not your job to do that. If they refuse, let them know you'll be taking your business to a dealer that wants to help you take care of your investment.

I, however, am in a lease and BMWNA told me it's not available.

/rant on

They also told me I couldn't rewind/fast forward on my stereo, which isn't true, they also sold H/K stereos advertised as higher quality equipment than it was, they also said hands-free trunk opening was in the premium package, which it's not. I'm over their shenanigans and won't be buying a first year model vehicle from BMW ever again.

I'm attempting to do some legwork for you guys since I work at a BMW dealership (I'm corporate for a group).

I emailed this to our BMW Service Manager / Assistant Service Manager. I'm going to see what surfaces now.

Before we were turning it down but since this is coming up, he'll let me know. He told me to screenshot and they are passing it around.

Here you go guys, straight from BMWNA to our BMW Service Manager.

I'm thinking that Euro letter is a photocopy for all M cars and was passed along to the M235is without knowing the true facts.

Any 1,200 mi. service is probably being done out of goodwill - I personally would save that goodwill for something else that may pop up, because they'll see they goodwill'd this in your file and probably won't do so on the next questionable repair. It's really not necessary.

So interesting that there are contradictory official memos for the same car from the same manufacturer.

What it probably is is some people assume it's an m car and others who know better say it is a normal car. Which it kindof is.

If someone called in and asked if my m car gets 1200 mi service they will say yes. Even though most of is know it's not an m car and doesn't have breakin fluids.

Personally I'm going to take mine in get get the metal shavings out of the system then continue as planned. With seasonal services added in (my salesman promised me minimum 1 per year so that's what I will do).
