The engine is six years old though and their standards don't change. If they do, they come up with a new standard. Additive packages are probably very similar for the two oils.

Thank you for posting that. I agree that M1 is quality oil and is used in some crazier applications than ours. I would say it's safe to stick to the BMW 5W-30 until the warranty is up. On the E9X M3 forums there are several documented cases of people using oils other than the absurd TWS and voiding warranties, so I dont think the few bucks saved per oil change is worth the potential hassle while under warranty

A lot of my friends use the Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30. I'm thinking of switching to that as well.

Pennzoil Recommendation

I am returning back to the BMW family after a 2 year stint with Mercedes. The 2015 M235i 8sp will get an oil change this weekend . After some review I have decided to go with the Pennzoil website recommendation of Plat Euro 5W-40. My old N54 (07 335i) ran really hot so I used Redline 5W-30.
.
I find it very interesting that BMW recommends 5W-30 in the Pennzoil.
.
Although I find the Redline to be outstanding oil -- it starts to break down after around 7k due to low TBN. Since I am looking to change around 8k , I think it is best to stick to the super clean Euro Penn with higher TBN
.
I would be interested to hear addicts input on the BMW 5W-30 vs Pennzoil
5W-40 recommendation.

Can you top off between oil changes with an oil of a different brand/viscosity?

The owners manual lists acceptable oil for topping off if BMW oil isn't available. They all meet BMW standard LL1,I think. I remember that Pennzoil euro formula and valvoline syntec are two of them.

Castrol Edge Euro Formula 0W40 is also an option.
