I bought a CPO 2015 m235i, manual transmission which I expected to get similar gas mileage to my 128i. Immediately after driving it for about 10 miles on the freeway I could literally watch the needle go down. I thought it was just in my head and ignored it, but it's just getting plain annoying filling up this car so often.

If I drive for 10 minutes around the city, I can expect the needle to drop by two or three lines. The computer says I average around 15-17 mpg around the city, and a bit better on the highway. No matter what, I can always watch my gas gauge go down as I drive it. It's really getting in the way of actually enjoying the car, and although I understand it's a performance vehicle, I feel I'm in m3 territory when it comes to mileage. Any manual transmission owners experiencing the same? Going to take it in to BMW again when I get the chance.

Same here. Even with a heavy foot, I'm averaging about 23mpg. Did 1,000 miles in two weeks.

I've had my M235 MT vert for over two years now. I average 21+ with my mixed driving daily commuting and often see 28+ cruising the interstate at 75 mph.

Wonder if you have dragging brakes. If you have an infrared thermometer temperature gun, get out on the highway and drive at around 55 -65 mph for a few miles, then cost to a stop on the shoulder w/o using your brake pedal, go and then shoot the temps of each disc and maybe even hub to chk for one that registers very hot.

Also, this is way off, but if someone were attempting to disguise unusual gear whine by using a thick transmission or rear diff fluid.

My automatic averages 26-27 mpg in mostly rural/suburban driving; a manual will do a tick worse due to gearing.

Same car as yours - I get around 20MPG with listed mods and pretty aggressive, mostly city, driving.

I found that any time I am over 40mph the car wants you to put it in 6th. I don't even use 5th gear unless I'm on a hill.
You will get used to the car, I average around 22.6mpg and am never on the highway. Use 93oct and maybe change the plugs and coils.

The M235 will not get similar MPGs to your 128 if you're ever using boost. Your 128 was naturally aspirated and your M235 has a turbo. Under boost, the turbo adds a ton more air which accordingly requires a lot more fuel. Under boost, a 3.0 turbo motor is consuming fuel like well sorted 6.0 liter V8 as it's sucking in a similar amount of air.

Short distance driving with lots of cold starts and/or lots of city driving is terrible for MPGs, especially if you're driving in NO or Miami which have fairly heavy traffic in urban areas.

Chances are your M235 was filled with low octane fuel at the dealership. You need to be running at least 91 octane or MPGs will likely suffer.

You're absolutely wasting your time taking the car to the dealer because the car is smart enough to know if there is a fueling and/or timing issue killing mpgs. The M235 has a TON more power than that 128. Chances are you're driving it a bit harder as well. Driving around for 10 minutes will not give you an accurate idea of mpgs.

Getting 15 to 17 mpg in an urban cycle is normal. I've owned my M235 6MT for nearly 3 years and 30K miles now. I can see sub 17 mpg is heavy traffic, lots of idling, etc. and up to 30 mpg in pure highway driving. Overall, I see around 21-23mpg in 50/50 city/highway driving. In the winter, my MPGs go down about 2mpg because of stone cold starts, thick cold engine and gear oil, and crappy oxygenated winter gas.

There's nothing wrong with your M235.

I like the suggestion that it may be a cheap gas problem. Have you tried 91 or 93, OP? Does it help? My 235 has gotten just under 20 mpg overall in 35K miles of mostly short suburban trips (6 miles to work and local driving). I sometimes push it but not often. On the highway I get just shy of 30 on long trips. That is about 2 or 3 mpg less overall than my old 325, not bad for a much more powerful car.

I always fill up with premium, I've had the car since September.
