Will a Large Dog Fit?

Hi all, do you think a large dog would be able to squeeze in the back if a 2 series for say short trips to the groomer or vet?

Well... how big is this dog? serious question.

I don't think it can be a problem. Unless we are talking about this guy...

Dude I love the way you type! It is like a stream of consciousness response, every single time! So entertaining

Turn the question around and ask if a large human could fit and the answer is yes.

So take the trip and enlist the help of a friend to hold the dog. Solved.

One cannot safely hold a dog any more than one can safely hold an infant. Both require restraints. In the event of impact, the rough calculation is F=MA. 50lb dog at 30 mpg impact is approximately 1,500 lbs someone is trying to hold while someone in front is hoping that "missile" is not aimed toward their head.

My reply was based on taking a calculated risk due to the OP stating he was taking a "short trip".

Just like my parents took a "calculated risk" when we road tripped with me sleeping on the rear window deck of a 1976 Pontiac LeMans. Kind of like that...

Sincerely glad you are still around to tell the story. Not all are, including those who thought short trips near home were somehow safer.

Thanks for your insightful guidance. Not needed nor desired. It was bad advice (unintentional, I'm sure) given and not for anyone to follow, much like we share about less important subjects, such as cars.

How about taking your dog to a dealer and asking them if you can try out how they fit (the dog, not the dealer ...)? Then you can make up your own mind. A convertible with the top down in nice weather will obviously be more dog-friendly, but that may not be your vehicle of preference.

I have to admit, this is a valid question. If this is a big dog, as in anything bigger than a healthy lab, I don't see the dog being particularly comfortable back there.

your advice is sound; he should take it to the dealer. But will the dealer oblige stuffing someone's dog in the backseat of one of their cars? Interesting idea. Let's see.

I take my dog along for test drives all the time. Getting him in and out of the back seat easily is a factor (albeit not the highest priority factor) when looking at cars. I've never once had a dealer complain or refuse, for the most part they enjoy having him along. Granted he's small, hypoallergenic and doesn't shed, so not really a big problem.

To Sportstick typical sage advice, he's always in his lookout seat with a harness. For dogs that are too big for a seat like that, any dog no matter how big can wear a harness that's attached to an empty seat belt buckle, the strap is like $5.

Any serious sales person should be able to put some plastic sheeting on the back seat to protect against scratches and hairs. Not a big deal for a potential $40K+ sale and another notch against the sales target. BMW also do various dog restraint and seat cover options as well. @emac being a Z4 owner already should help convince.

One think I forgot: the 2 coupé and convertible come with a drop-down rear seat back. When down, it provides a flat platform hat might be more comfortable for a pet. In the UK this was an option - not sure about the US, but worth checking if @emac wants to take it further.

The only issue with the convertible (I have had both) is that the fold down platform is quite a bit narrower than the coupe. Actually the entire back seat is narrower and pushed further forward to accommodate the top and its guts.

As much as I hate to steer someone to another marque, if the dog doesn't fit in the 2-er and OP is set on a coupe, the TT with the rear seats folded down has a HUGE amount of space. Seats up the rear is total garbage, my little dog and his seat wouldn't fit even with me driving (I am not tall). But with the seat down and the hatch loading option the dog should be very comfortable.

I have fit my 100 pound German Shepherd in the back in a pinch when he was sick and I didn’t want him trying to jump into the truck and hurt himself.

You should be fine unless you have some species like a Great Dane

One thing I would keep in mind is that the rear windows cannot be opened at all (at least on the coupe). I'm not a dog owner so not sure if that's of concern or not... Just mentioning it, as it is my primary concern when I consider my kid's inclination towards car sickness. (What ever happened to the pop-out rear "smoker's windows" of the old days! I guess the answer is that smoking got un-cool. But that ventilation was valuable.)

Statistically, most accidents happen within 5 miles of your home.

So as long as your not near your home you're ahead of the odds.

That silly statistic is only true because you are near your home every single time you go anywhere... (and again upon your return).

After almost 20 responses, OP still has not told us how big the dog is!
And yet we persist. Is it the COVID talking?

That's why I keep my car in climate controlled storage 5 miles away from my house.
