M235i - Resonator delete worth it on stock exhaust?
Hi - curious to hear if anyone has feedback on a resonator delete on a fully stock exhaust.
All the clips and threads I've been able to find show it being done in conjunction with additional exhaust mods like a full catback replacement or a muffler delete. Specifically whether it adds any sound at all. I've recently coded out ASR and the car is way too quiet and I am not interested in a full sport exhaust expense. |

I looked in/at it when I cut my exhaust for a muffler install. It's VERY small and there isn't much packing in it. I would guess that it smooths out some of the undesirable notes the engine makes and doesn't have any big effect on tone or volume. The 3 and 4 series have a larger bottle resonator that probably makes a bigger difference. I left mine in after thinking about it some, I didn't feel it was worth the work to take it out

I ended up cutting it off. Didn't want anything that would piss off the neighbors, but wanted a little extra sound. Love the tone in sport + mode. I disabled the fake engine sounds when I first got my car. The delete brought back some grunt.

Removing the resonator will result in a slight increase in exhaust volume and increase the aggression of the overrun (burble/pops), but still retain a clean OEM sound. It’s a simple and affordable way to give your car a more exotic exhaust note. Dinan makes a great resonator delete mid pipe for $250 if you’re looking for a clean swap/install. You or your shop will need to cut the OEM exhaust at the factory cut points to install.

I just cut the entire exhaust system off and it's great. Just cutting the rez out is such a tease

The first part of this gave me a much needed laugh I like the way you think, I couldn't do straight pipe all the time so put in a cutout before an AA muffler and it's really good. Shift brap is like the crack of lightning now

Cut out the resonator and with the windows up you really can't tell any difference. Slight "drone" around 2k rpm. Windows down you can hear a little bit of a difference. Not significant enough that a frequent passenger would even notice. Ended up getting the m-performance muffler after the resonator delete. Sound was quite a bit better. Still wanted more so I installed an electric exhaust cutout as well.

I had it cut out yesterday - $100 to remove and weld in a 3" pipe.
Def. a little louder and "raw" sounding, the overruns are more noticeable. No drone I can hear. Worthwhile for a few bucks. |

Nope, really just hear it when you get on it a bit. Freeway driving is fine. Used to have a few cars with exhausts and this definitely is a good compromise for some grunt with steal being livable. Comfort mode, it's like stock.

Are there 2 resonators in our cars? Which one did you cut out?

It's just a pipe... Line up the replacement and match the shape, this will reveal the cut points. I would suggest flaring the downstream end to accept the pipe coming in and using stainless step clamps. Flaring tool available at any auto store, for rent too at some me places. I would consider putting in a diverter valve too, to have an open exhaust (muffler cutout) lmao for when you "REALLY" want some noise
