Just did an oil analysis….

Hey All,
Just got the results of my oil analysis back for my 2014 mins m235i (117k km/72k miles) and I’m quite concerned with the findings!

Old oil was in there for about 6-7000km since last year. In this last year the car has been tuned, new iridium plugs after the tune were installed, new vrsf intercooler, fabspeed dump pipe, milltek exhaust, ingen CAI etc., before this normal bmw service schedule was followed (which we know is too long/too many k’s before oil changes)...

I can’t upload the photos but here are the results -
Lead - 3.0ppm
Iron - 14ppm
Copper - 2ppm
Silicon - 2ppm
Everything else - 0

Worryingly there is some lead and copper in my report (thought these are meant to be 0).

Also worryingly - the oil had 2% fuel dilution (the report says to watch this, and that some engines up to 3% is normal), and my nitration was 24 (range on the report is 24 being caution and 40+ being high).

I’m planning on doing 5k km oil changes and I don’t thrash the car, drive it below 3k rpm before oil is nice and hot (and even then I don’t ever really go beyond 4k).

I’m really paranoid reading all the horror stories with the n55 motors spinning Rod bearings

Are you sure you're not reading about the S65 motor and not the N55? The E90/E92/E93 series M3's with the S65 V8 were notorious for reports of spun rod bearings. Modified or stock, didn't matter. Some reports of spun bearings at less than 10K miles on stock cars, and many reports of cars over 150K on the original bearings that have no issues. Just depends on the car. M3 crowd did plenty of oil analysis and it's never conclusive that if the numbers are ok then that means you won't have a problem.

Here's what I would do if I were you cause I did the same with my M3 = just drive and enjoy your car, stop worrying about it. If you still can't get these reports of bearing issues out of your head then do what the M3 crowd does to clear their conscience of it - have them replaced as preventative maintenance.
