M Performance LSD
Hello! Looking to have the M performance LSD fitted on my MY2020 M240i. The final drive on my auto is 2.81 I believe. I'm seeing two different LSD's on the website. Both say they're compatible but one says I- 3.08 and one says I- 2.81. I'm assuming I should go for the one that matches final drives correct? (Stock Code 33108659989) Thanks!
Also, anything else I should buy with it? I know there's a "lifetime oil" sticker but anything else actually needed for install? And has anyone had the LSD installed by a BMW dealer on a car that already had a catback? I know the exhuast has to come down so hopefully they won't nag too much about having to touch my Remus system. Thinking about just taking it to an independent shop for this reason.

As far as I know, it is a direct swap, something anyone could DIY if he wanted. It is not like the aftermarket where you need to cut the crown wheel off the original diff and then drill holes in it to bolt the LSD.
Not sure if it comes with any seals, when I had my Quaife installed I also had all seals replaced with new ones. Not sure if this is a requirement, but they are cheap and it can't hurt to do it while you're there ( or whomever does the install ). Doing it separately costs a lot, I know because my left seal started leaking after a year of track days and I had to replace it ( I had them all changed again, just to be safe ). As far as final drive goes, they are both compatible, but a different ratio will change the torque and top speed characteristics. The 3.08 will result in higher wheel torque, but will cost you top speed. There are calculators online to find out exactly what changes.

So they're both compatible? In the thread linked above it seems someone who should have got 3.08 got the 2.81 and had issues. The other way around is fine? Would any coding have to be done? I wonder why they made the change from 3.08 to 2.81 in the first place... Will have to look into it more.

I did my homework and apparently it can be coded with special coding tools, NOT the typical ones, and I made the decision to get the right one and sold the other and learned a lesson to be more careful with part numbers. I have no direct experiences, but if you don't have the ZF8, only your speedometer will be way off but you won't get a warning every time to get on the highway. FWIW. ///Rich |

I have automatic transmission and my Quaife is a higher ratio and there was never an issue or warning. I'm now in my 4th year with the LSD installed, and I track my car a lot.
I think the references to coding when doing an LSD install are in regard to disabling the e-LSD to change how the DSC intervenes. I did not coded out the e-LSD* because basically the e-LSD is a function that brakes the wheel that looses traction, but with a physical LSD installed, the e-LSD will almost never engage, unless you have both rear wheels in the air, for example. * I think coding the e-LSD off will also remove brake boost, which saved my car when I boiled the brake fluid, but not sure on this though. The speedometer is not affected, the top speed is, as in if your top speed was 250km/h, with a higher ratio diff it will be lower, like let`s say 245km/h. That is the actual speed at which the car moves, not what is shown on the dash, this is why I mentioned the calculators, they calculate the exact top speed you will have. Unless you want a higher wheel torque, going with the 2.81 is the best way, if you want to increase the wheel torque than you choose the higher ratio.
