Furious: 2016 228i timing chain and coolant leak

After taking my 2016 228i (33,350 miles) in to have the thermostat replaced on Friday, the shop calls to inform me of two critical items:
  • Upper timing chain guide is broken
  • Coolant supply connection at turbo is leaking. If line is damaged then replacement will require removing the turbo, which will pile on the the labor costs

I understand I am out of warranty, but the fact that I may have to drop close to $4k into this car at 33,000 miles is just absolutely unacceptable.

The shop recommended I contact the dealer to see if they can cover the timing chain issue due to the low mileage, but I'm not holding my breath because everything I've read BMW only extended the coverage through 2015 model years.

Have any other N20/N26 owners experienced issues like these at this mileage? Is there any chance BMW will cover the timing chain repair?

I can't really offer any assistance, but can definitely sympathize. This really, really sucks and I'm sorry you're having to deal with it. The N20 should-have-been-a-recall was why I sold my 328i and why I swore off BMWs for a few years.

is there any definitive pre-maintenance / parts swap that can be done (aside from aggressive oil changes) at less than $4K before the failure occurs?

Depending on 1. your relationship with your dealer and 2. how recently your warranty expired, they may be willing to do a goodwill repair. They have budget for that sort of thing, it's entirely at their discretion.

I appreciate the responses.

I was just in touch with the service manager at the dealer who told me this sounds like a strong candidate for a goodwill repair, which is awesome if they're able to follow through.

I'll update the thread if there's a resolution!

Good luck... in my experience at least the dealer tries to do the right thing in most cases.

zdro Sorry about your car!

I had the same thing happen to my 2017 230ix on my way home from work last summer. The car billowed white smoke from the engine bay on the freeway and eventually went into limp mode. All in all, the repairs were about $3,400. Luckily, the car was under warranty, I suggest you go to your nearest dealer and try to work something out being that your car is still under the 45k mile mark.

Good Luck!

zedro, out of warranty repairs on my 2015, 48,000-mile, 235.

Rear trunk latch, oil filter housing gasket, front thrust bearings on the leading suspension arms, oil pan gasket.

Wanted you to read that some of us have significant repair cost involved with our cars.

has anyone dont this timing chain kit as preventative maintenance?

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...0aAjeQEALw_wcB

i've asked my indy shop about doing it, but they havent done one on an N20 yet. i'm closing on 86K miles and want to keep this car for the long haul as a winter / bad weather car and to help keep some miles off my inbound M2C.

i've loved everything about my 228ix ownership and want to keep loving it for another 5+ years, so it seems like this job would be mandatory if expecting to run it to 150K+ miles... thoughts?

2017 230xi with 29k... car just drained all it's antifreeze all over the road to my home (I didn't know it). Went to run an errand the next day and the low coolant light came on, then high temp... drove straight to dealership (only a mile). 3 months out of warranty and they want $700 to replace a hose and refill. They say they have to remove the alternator. Called BMWNA and opened a claim... I guess we will see.

Any insight as to what caused this?

IndyBMW Sneekypete I had this happen last year at the beginning of summer. The car had just broken 30k miles and all of a sudden on my way home from work on a hot day, the car went into limp mode on the freeway and started smoking like mofo. I ended up blowing a coolant hose and charge pipe. How the dealer explained it to me, is the 2 series uses up a lot of coolants, and when the weather changes it can make the coolant extremely hot. Ultimately, causing things like the coolant hose to burst under extreme pressure.

Luckily, the car was under warranty, but I did have to go 3 weeks without my car because the parts had to be shipped from Germany. Without the warranty, the damages would have been around $3k.

On my 2017, at 63k miles, I had to replace the turbo coolant hose for $2,600. I also had to replace the water pump for $1000. This was right after the $900 tune up. $4,500 in car repairs in a month in a 3.5 year old car. I called BMW and they told me the turbo coolant hose was my responsibility. I am seriously thinking about dumping the car, I can't take too many more financially abusive repairs.

My repair-bill story had been similar to the account above.
And with my 235 being 7-years old this August I simply don't know how to proceed.

vh2720, what would you purchase if you got rid of your 2-series ?

I wish I knew what else to buy. I have gotten spoiled by the comfort and handling of the 230i. I don't want to get locked into a cycle of buying a new BMW every time the warranty runs out. I would welcome any ideas.

Buy from Carmax, buy the $2,500 warranty. It'll get you 5 more years and up to 160k miles depending on the year and mileage of the car you're buying.

Anything engine related, they'll send you to the dealer. It's also an extremely comprehensive warranty.
